Your finger, that is...
Place your middle finger over the fleshy bit that covers the opening to your ear: I use the right ear.
Apply just enough pressure to deaden the sound.
Now speak.

So it looks funny. I'd rather look odd than sound awful.
I hardly use this technique, but when I get really hung, it always works.
