why do non stutterers get nervous when they have to make speeches?? its not like they have this "chip on their shoulder" like we do. what are they nervous about?? we worry about stumbling on tough words and looking incompetent and unsure about the subject matter even though we are probably more knowledgable than they are.

what do you think??

Yes.
I often think it is selfish.
But I guess everyone has their own fears.

Making speeches is probably our worst nightmare :)
But we are all different. I remember another boy in my school class, years ago, who had a bad stutter; but he was able to publicly speak without it bothering him at all. While I cringed and shook and was utterly unable to do the same. Because of him, I was expected (and forced) to read out loud in class, as if to say "if HE can do it, then so can you". How I hated that boy!
But in retrospect: Good for him! I was very, very jealous, I think, of his ability (or maybe lack of sensitivity) to subject others to the painful exhibition of his horrible speech without it bothering him.

I can do presentations with no problem whatsoever. It may have something to do with the fact that I feel in control. I have been an economics teacher for the last four years and I really enjoyed this job. Being in the classroom, I feel, transports me to a different state of consciousness.

A couple days ago I had to give an informative speech on Video Games in class. I was able to dodge it once but finaly it was my turn to speak. I got up in front of the class and only got a few words out before I got stuck. It was such a bad block that my teacher commenced the clapping and I walked off the stage in our classroom ashamed.

Some of the kids and an assistant teacher took me into the hallway and kept trying to tell me I don't have to be scared, everyone wants you to succeed, blah blah. Of course I dont have to be scared, but because of this "chip on my shoulder" I am scared whenever I have to speak in front of people I'm not 100% comfortable with.

Well that day really ed, and after that class I had a horrible headache. So, to people who don't stutter and are scared to speak in front of people: What do you have to be scared of?

I wish I went to school with people like that.

Good post Bladus. An embarrassing read :(
I can see it all too clearly. I imagine the teacher only made it worse. Stutterers are an isolated little group, and there's little to be done about that from the outside.
All you can do is try to be courageous and take the view that you are as good as anyone else, and if you HAVE to do this awful "speaking in public" thing, then the audience will just have to endure the consequences, as you yourself do.
As Theo says: "I wish I went to school with people like that" :)
What on earth was the clapping thing about? That sounds really awful...
"This stuttering idiot made a real mess of that: let's give him a round of applause!"
Ugh.
Endure it all, Bladus. Look ahead to the time when you get a grip on your stutter, and it's not so bad. Sooner or later, you'll be able to deal with it.
Strength and honour :)

i know, it sounds so condescending. i hate when people think they know everything about your problem and make it sound like "its not that bad".. they don't want the problem but apparently i'm supposed to deal with it.

your question is like a real mystery to me...

i ask that question every time the phone rings in my home and my non-stuttering family members refuse to answer it...

i mean, "why on earth would you want to avoid the phone?!"

Don't you ever feel like simply not being bothered to answer the phone?
It is an intrusion, isn't it? You didn't ask someone to call you, did you?
If you did ask, then fine: answer it.
If you didn't, realise that you have a choice about answering it or not.
Anyway: if it is important, no doubt it will ring again later :)
