View Full Version : Eliminate Stimulants like caffeine, sugar etc...
I stutter more when I do these
- Not enough sleep
- Drink caffeinated drinks like Coke or coffee.
- Smoke
Dr. Schwartz of the airflow technique says caffeine, sugar and other stimulants encourage muscle and vocal tension. They should be eliminated or greatly reduced.
He also say skip the sweets. Sugar reduction alone has completely eliminated stuttering in some children. You may observe rapid improvement in your speech simply by decreasing your consumption of cakes, cookies, candy and soda.

Dr. Schwartz of the airflow technique
I tried that airflow thing, taking a full breathe and exhaling while saying that first word, but it did not help. I still stutter on that first word even with a full breathe and exhale!

Hey, I also suspected I stutter more when I don't get enough sleep. I don't have a proof for it, but I began to suspect about it some years ago.
Regarding caffeine, I don't believe it affects me: I can have really fluent days even if I drink a lot of it.
And smoke... I don't smoke, so I can't say.

I love soda!! I stopped drinking it for 2 weeks to see if my stutter would lessen. It did not. It stayed the same. So caffeine for me has no affect on the stutter issue!

Its well documented that fatigue, illness and stress all make you stutter worse.
Whether it would help me or not I've given up too much in my life to give up coffee too.

And though these measures may help diminsih disfluencies for some people, people have been stuttering for a loooong time, its one of the first documented speech pathologies.
Stuttering has been around a lot longer than Coca Cola. :D
