For the second time in my life I woke up to smoke alarms and smoke in my home.

The last time it was in my apartement building and it really traumatized me for a while. For years I looked for smoke in the halls and always think I smell smoke everywhere.

This will be an expensive day but everything should be ok.
Its like 5 degrees below zero with the windchill (faranheit) in NJ today and we lost our boiler and heat. Luckily I was home and I didn't lose my house to my burning boiler.

There goes the kitchen cabinets I was looking to buy and there goes my weekend in Miami.

Staying positive though. Luckily I was home and this happened today and not a day later.

As much I sometimes like to think, stuttering isn't the cause of all my problems. :D
Oh the "joys" of being a new first time home owner.

Sorry to hear about your boiler. When I first seen your post, I thought, I kept him up too late and he missed his plane. I'm from Canada, so we still live in igloos, so forgive the question. The boiler you talk about, your house is water heated. Anyhow, sorry to hear about your boiler, there is a joke there somewhere but can't think of one, I need my coffee. :D

Ari,

As you say, it could have been a hell of a lot worse than it actually is. OK, you have to get the boiler fixed but at least you still have a roof over your head. Also and most importantly, you werent hurt and you live to fight another day.

Couldn't have been luckier!!!
Truth be told I really didn't want to go to Miami anyway, family obligation kinda thing.

We use steam heat so no hot water means no heat.
Nonetheless, my brother is a contractor, he already bought a new boiler and his plumber friend is expected today.
I was pretty freaked out this morning and will enjoy my "day off".

My previous experiences with smoke and fire were much much worse.

When I lived in NYC I was on the second floor above a brick oven pizzeria. I woke one night to an apartment full of smoke and screaming in the hallways.

Of course I was the nut that couldn't get catch one of my freaked out cats and almost fought a few members of the FDNY who after realizing I was still in there "insisted" that I vacate the premises.

That was actually the 2nd fire in my building but it was the first time I woken up by smoke and alarms just like I did this morning.

The first time we had a fire in my building I arrived home drunk to find the FDNY and NYPD in my apartment, door busted down and my 2 foot bong (water pipe) sitting there for all to see. Now those were the days!

As freaked out as I understandably was this morning I am still alive and my house is still standing and I only lost the boiler.
Could have been a lot worse.

I have heard of people doing things to get out of going somewhere, but didnt you take it a bit far Ari by setting fire to your boiler.

Maybe next time you should make an excuse like you have man flu...

I never do things the "easy way".

Even better news now is that the automatic low water shutoff did not work and it looks like our homeowners insurance should pick up the tab.

My brother also had some electric space heaters that he uses when he's working in a new house without windows or whatever so it all could have been soooooooo much worse.

Nick, I read you were a bit down lately and I hope you are feeling better today.

Getting cold in here.

Ari,

Glad to hear you and your belongings are ok. Fires are not a good thing :p (understatement of the year). Sorry you missed your trip to sunny and warm Miami . . . Even if you did not want to do the family thing . . . Just being in Miami beats NJ in winter!!!

Are we still on for the call this weekend? Let me know.

Peace,

Elliott

Thank you sir and yes we are on.
