Hey, I am new to this website and I am 19 years old. For my whole life I had been stuttering very severly, and well, I went to a lot of therapy and a lot of what they told me, simply put would not work. I had a good friend who would always encourage me to not say "nevermind" or to not stop talking when I was in a block. He helped me a lot in finding out how to cure my stuttering because he always gave me encouragment in not giving up. The fact is that I know that this worked for me, and I want to see if it works for others. I remeber when I went to speech therapy my therapist told me to breathe in and as I breathed out to say the word. This would not work as I would find that i was breathing to hard or to fast and I would run out of air and get nervous. However, the back up plan was to use a little "hum" to get your voice started. Usually by the time I screwed up on the breathing in and out techiqnue i would just try to tough it out and get the words out through stuttering. One day for whatever reason I decided to try to "hum" before I spoke. To my surprise it worked and it sounded something like this, mmmhey my name is mmmpat. While this may not sound normal, it is 100% times better then getting blocks or severe stuttering. Anyways, at first I figured that it might have just been a fluke, but then I went to a fastfood place (by myself, at the time I would never order anything by myself, I would always have my friends order for me) and I managed to order the food all by myself, I was so shocked, I did have to hum a little bit while I did this, but I was fluent and it felt a lot better then actually stuttering. I will always be able to tell what words I am going to stutter on so I would know when to hum on these words. For example lets say I was going to stutter on the word "college" (I can always tell when I know I am going to stutter so therefore I know when to hum, I don't know if everyone is like this) I would say Right now I am going to mmmcollege. It sounds way better then saying c-c-c-c-c-college or just not saying anything at all. Soon I gained confidence because I was talking in school, restaraunts, to new people, phone, etc that I would have to hum very minimally and even when I did it was WAY better then actually stuttering. I think the reason behind this is a lot of the problem is getting your voice started, and by humming just a little bit you can get your voice started. I am in college currently and I am taking a communication class which involves a lot of oral presentations, and I am always able to do well, and I always tell the teachers before hand that I have a speech impediment. The "hum" has changed my life big time and it has made speaking so much easier for me and I feel that I have changed my life in a very good way. It is not perfect, as humming can sound abnormal or sometimes you can hum for to long, but I promise it is way way way better then actual stuttering is, and I want to hear feedback from other stutters to see if this techqinue works, if any of you stutterers have any other problems or questions about this techiqnue feel free to ask me, and I hope that this helps you guys.

Ya, you might as well give it a try, I know that it has worked for me but I also realize everyone is different so it may or may not work for others. But if it does work for others to that will be excellent, and good luck to you, I hope it works for you :)

funny how we all have our own methods.. :D whatever gets you through the day right!?? i once tried something like that a while ago but instead of "hhmmm", i would say "aaahhhmmm"; then other times i'd substitute the tough words with not so tough ones.

yeah i somtimes just try to not think of what i say and then it goes right thru. But like on saturday me and my friends were at YMCA we wanted to go play basketball but werent registered so they told me go ask her for a application im like you go then both of em said u go and i was like ahhhh fine and they know i stutter but i ono and then i came there i was nervous and just said it can i have a application and it went really good and then i wasnt nervous anymore. If it gets me by suprose i always seem to not stutter but if i have to think about it i stutter its weird so i try to just say what i think rather then thinking and then saying it.

Ima try that too. I use the passive air flow technique but i could use "Pat's Hum" as a backup. Thanks for the tip pat

Same with me Prof. In class when the teacher asks a question and I think of the answer I might not raise my hand because i think i'll stutter. But if a teacher asks me spontaneously the words will just come out with no stutter.

Hey guys, i am also new to this forum. Im 20 years old, from the netherlands, i go to the university, and i stutter from my 7th.
My stuttering is not THAT severely, about 2-3 times in a scentence, and its not heavy stuttering but easy. But im noticing by stuttering is becoming worse..not less, its supposed to go away as you grow older??? when I went to college my stuttering was almost completely gone, i went in a furturnity blabla.. but then a year or some later the stuttering came back. Most friends didnt even know i stuttered. I had to go use the Ehhmm again (same as pats technique). Also sometimes speak on low air greatly reduces stuttering. Anyone ever tried that? blowing out all air and then speak, you dont stutter at all then. But when you go too far its like you cant breeth or something so be carefull:P
and how about your stuttering, is it bad?? or just light?

well, byebye!

same thing happened to me when i went to college (sans the fraternity, :D ).

people for some reason think that the stutter goes away as you get older but thats not the case. there's no reason for it to get better; its not a physiological thing, its psychological. for it to get better you have to concsiously do something about it.

When you are a child you are so naive and unaware, so comfortable. When you grow up you seem to be more aware and more selfconscious. I believe this pressure can be good or bad in some cases. Good because this awareness brings some people to stutter less. Bad because this awareness brings stress which brings people to stutter more.
