Hi, everyone, this is my first post on this forum, and I would just like to introduce myself and inform you guys of my problem in hopes that I may find some help.

I am a recent college graduate, and my stuttering problem is one that I have never heard of before from other friends, can't find anything online about it (unless its in here) and a psychaitrist recently told me that he has never heard of this, and to try going to a speech therapist.

Ok-
I do not have a "common" stutter, as is its doesn't always happen to me. For about the past 2-3 years, whenever I go out drinking, I begin to stutter, and the more I drink the worse it gets. I know most of you are probably saying, 'well just stop drinking.' and yes I see the argument. Yet, I am young, and I enjoy a good time at the bars like anyone my age. I am also trying to talk to females, etc, etc, and this problem is just seeming to get worse, and now at times, I would just rather leave wherever I am than to stutter as much as I do.

Whenever I have searched this subject online, I get nothing. Actually I seem to get the opposite. Alcohol seems to help/calm/relax people with stutters and in part decreases the amount of stuttering.

And I thought it was all a mental thing, but I am just not sure now. I do it regardless of the situation, if its just me and my best friend drinking and I am in my most comfortable state, it will occur.

Yes, its beer, liquor and wine--any alcohol.

So sorry for the long intro, just wanted to say hi, I am glad to be here, and I would appreciate any insight from you guys here on the forum.

Thanks

welcome dub, I often joke with other stutterers who don't drink - why bother stuttering if you not going to drink. For me, beer drinking gives me a chance to let loose with others and not be so uptight with always having to perform. Drinking doesn't lessen my dyfluencies only lets me be more give-a-shit about them.

Welcome to the stuttering forum, they accept any form of stuttering here. :D That is very interesting to hear about your problem, you sure it is a stutter and not slurring your words. I know a few people, once they drink, you can't understand them very well if at all. Looking forward in hearing what you have to share.

Thanks guys.

Yes I am sure that it is a stutter and not a slur, although I wont say I didn't expect someone asking that:)

I really dont know the cause of it, (i mean apparently its alcohol) but I'm looking to find out because it seems like not many other people have the same problem.

I guess I will start exploring medications and more desperate measures:(

Thanks for hte welcome
