Hi,

This is my first time joining a forum for my speech block and stuttering problem. It's exciting to share this problem with other people that understand and in turn we can all help one another.

I started stuttering at the age of around 11/12 years old. Before this I spoke fluently and my parents used to say I spoke very fast compare with the children my age.

I recently bought books on stuttering and how I can control it. One of them that I have started reading is called "Mastering Blocking and Stuttering: A Cognitive Approach to Achieving Fluency (2004) by Bobby G. Bodenhamer, D.Min.

After reading the first chapter, I was so excited. I always new that I somehow "learnt how to stutter unconsciously" and that my past had something to do with it. I had a rough childhood and teen years due to a lot of family dilemmas. I grew up and ignore the problem and hope that the blocking and stuttering would just go away or I would outgrow it. Unfortunately I'm 24 years of age now and I still block and stutter. Not as much but enough to affect work and social life.

The book isn't a cure but it helps you to understand the root of your problem and it's up to you to have time and patience to guide you to fluency. This is what I'm working towards.

I'm planning to go back to college this spring and get a degree to better my career but also to try once again and this time I won't give up. It was hard to grow up with stuttering because I couldn't do or say what I wanted to. Presentations and making friends was very hard. Especially when all the teacher thinks that making you read in front of the class would help you get better.

I feel like there were opportunities in life that I let go because of my speech and of my mental state that I thought I can't do it blaming the problem and making it worse.

There's so much to say I mean "type" lol. I'll save more for another time. Hope to hear from everyone.
