Hello to everyone here. I recently discovered this forum while searching for information on the subject of stuttering.
I am 22 years old and currently work as a self employed window cleaner in the Birmingham area of the UK. I first started stuttering when I was about 9 while still in primary school. The stutter was not too bad during this period but it became worse when I went to secondary school. It has been a problem ever since. For the most part I suffer from the block version of stuttering where you know what you want to say but can't force the word out. I often try to substitute words for others that I find easier to say and use lots of "um" etc while talking. With that being said I should make it clear that my stutter is only really a problem with strangers, people I don't know well or authority figures. When talking to family and friends it is not too bad really.
I don't know if this is the wise thing to do but I don't like people knowing I have a stutter so I try and hide it as much as possible. To people that don't know me well this may make me appear as though I am being rude, arrogant or as if I simply have nothing to say. Because of this I don't make a good first impression when meeting new people.
