Hello im laura im new on here, deciding to join after having a bad day at uni yesterday wiv my stutter!!
My main issue is saying my name, i cant say it unless im saying it 2 myself or sometimes if its written in front of me i can say it. does any1 else have problems wiv names??? I have to get my mum to ring up places fro me and i write my name on a piece of paper if i go to appointments. I've had a stutter since i was little but i hide it a lot so everyone thinks im just really shy which really annoys me coz sometimes i just wish i could shout out and tell every1 im not shy!!! My stutter isnt very severe i can say sentences etc but i get stuck on my name and certain words and when i get stressed or nervous i stutter a lot more. I go to the speech threapist which really helps as we do breathing excercises tomake me more relaxed.
I try my best not 2 let my speech control my life and not let it beat me, recently ive been open about my speech to people and they usually understand!
I hope to talk to you alll soon
laura x:)

I am pretty much the same, i sometimes find saying my name extremely difficult! i am also a student, and have just come back to my third and final year! meeting all the new people in my halls was particularly hard for me! but i have been back for a few days now, and am feeling more confident and relaxed. I like you am trying to not let my speech problem take over my life, but it is hard! I feel i would have a lot more to offer people, and a lot more input into conversations without this problem! i also hide my stutter quite well!
good luck

I often have a problem saying my name aswell. If I have an appointment at something like a dentist and I have to give my name to the person at reception I find it very hard. Sometimes I write it down on paper and just show them my name but I imagine that probably looks very strange and may draw more attention to me.

Hello Laura,
Your speech sounds very similar to mine. I do not have a severe stutter but I do have problems saying my name in certain situations, particularly when introducing myself to people. Having said that I have very little problem saying my name on the phone, such as when phoning a call centre and when I go to appointments I always give my surname first followed by my full name which for some reason seems to work!
I can totally relate to the "shy" label thing. Because my stutter is not always obvious, people always think I am shy, but if I did not have this problem I would be a lot more outgoing. I am trying my best to overcome this issue though and try to stay positive.
Cheers,
Riverman
P.S. I live in Staffs too.
