Hi everyone,
I am a fourth year psychology student from Ireland. I dont stutter myself so i hope ye dont mind me posting here but i was hoping you might be able to answer some questions i have. I am doing some research about the listeners reactions to a person that stutters and was wondering what you all think about that? I am only beginning my research so this is just to clarify my ideas, it will not be part of the project.
Id really appreciate hearing any reactions ye have to this research idea,
Tracey

Welcome Tracey, and i am sure you can find a lot of willing person's on here to help you in your research. It will also give you a better understanding of the world of a PWS. Looking forward in hearing from you.

Hi Tracey,
First of all, I believe this is a true fact that most often stutteres are highly sensitive about the reaction of others against their stutter, unless they counsiously try not to be sensitive.
Reactions differ:
Ignoring: they ignore and continue the discussion
Not understanding: they don't understand the needs of a stutterer (patience), and they harsh
Caring: they understand and wait for the responses
Sympathy: I hate this one

Thanks so much for replying to my post, i've found reading the threads on this site really helpful. My biggest question is about the method i will be using for my research....i hope to have an audio recording of someone that stutters to play to participants after which they will fill in a questionnaire.
My supervisor is worried that i will offend the person by asking them to be recorded for this purpose, and i definately dont want to do that. Would anyone here be offended in that situation or what do ye think???

Tracey,
Stuterrers don't always stutter!
90% of my university friends never could guess I stutter, because I stutter in rare ocassions.
So, you should find a person who does stutter very often to be interviewed!
Some people get annoyed, but some dont to have their voice recorded.
