Im Edd aged 56
Had a bad stammer all my life
Shopping for me is easy in a supermarket no need to talk. Some shops I need to ask for goods. Ive had such bad times of cant get the words out and making me upset I cant go to that shop now. Or any other Peaple say write it down on paper what you want and hand over to the shop assistant. What do members think of this

hi m8 i seem to have the same problem like yourself and many others will be like us too.

i tend to tense up when theres other shoppers around.
i try to talk fast and try to get un-noticed.
but sometimes i cant say the words so i just leave the shop.

lol i had this problem yesterday, i was in a sports shop to buy a badminton set but they only sold the raquets, i couldnt see any shuttles anywhere. I knew i would stutter on shuttle and i knew exactly which part of the word i would stutter on so i darnt ask the assistant!!
So i bought the raquets and left! Luckily the supermarket next door sold shuttles but not raquets! hehe

I hate it when they ask - debit or credit - I usually get stuck on "debit" and everyone looks at me like I'm crazy.

I suppose it works. but I still feel embarrassed at giving over a note. I don't know which is more embarrassing: Stuttering, or handing over the note! LOL.
What I've done in the past is if I was going to stutter, I'd make myself some time, by pretending I'd forgotten what I went in for.In the meantime, I'd be "psyching" myself up for speaking, without a stammer.

Writing a note is OK but hardly a fix.
I once pretended I was mute and could not speak at all: it was amazing how solicitous (look that word up) people became: they bent over backwards to try and help me :)
But the best thing is not to feel rushed: take all the time you need.
No need to speak as fast as everybody else.
Stand up straight and make eye contact. Be fearless.
Let the words come in their own time.
And for heaven's sake: BREATHE.
Asif.

ooh, ooh, i have a story just to show how silly i really am about this. i've been putting of going to see "fantastic four" only because at the cashier window i know i'll have trouble on "fantastic"...it'll come out as: fantta--aa---s-aass-fan--fantastic.

instead i've gone to see all the other movies.. today, however, at the movies, i noticed this automated ticket issuing maching where you just put in the credit card and key in the movie you want, so guess which method i'll use next time.. sometimes i'm so frickin' hopeless.

Yes that IS pretty hopeless.
But all too familiar.
On the bright side: just look at how much you support the movie industry :)
They must LOVE you!

i worked in a deli for a few years... and its odd how i haven't noticed anyone stuttering at all. i sometimes stutter when helping customers but its usually very small and not a big deal. customers don't seem to mind.

I love stores that have self-checkout counters. :D But not many stores have them.....it's usually the big types of stores that are starting to use them.

try goign to the same place at the same time each week to order. even if you stutter a few times after a while it will get easier because you will be more comfortable around the people you are ordering from.
