Went to my GP, explained about the anti-anxiety & dopamine in the anti-depressants & how it's helped a few & how i'd like to try it as i've tried a lot of other things. The GP said he wouldn't feel happy prescribing me with such meds so he wrote to my consultant (someone who used to stammer) to see me but he said he won't see me, & instead has wrote out a prescription back to the GP, i'm peed off as i don't know what meds he's prescribed, he's just picked one out of the bag.

I had done research, had a list & story's that i was going to show to help with them choosing but instead, i didn't get to explain this so he's probably prescribed me one that no one's even tried.

Sorry for the rant but everything just seems so hard. Any ideas as this is too important to just try anything, i want someone who's interested & will read my list & work with me in choosing.

/Rant.

Chris.

If you go to 10 doctors, one is likely to say "yes"--hopefully, sooner than later. But be more persistent if that is what you want: Don't leave until they've looked at your paperwork.
Drugs are a serious issue though-- they impact your body's chemistry and are not natural.. Do you really want to put that inside of you?

Hey,

Yup, i've made a list & going to print of a number of pages on different types. I'm in the UK so i don't think we can go to different docs, only one's we're registered with, which is our GP's.

MR F - Consider that the meds should only be a form of relief, and not the answer you are looking for. Most of the time the questions are harder to find than the answers.

I would like to think that there are many on the forum that will be more than happy to share their experience with different meds and how it affected their speech.

For me, Fluoxetine (Prozac - a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)) provided relief from anxiety for a few years but as life changed so did my needs and the med no longer provided what I needed.

I would never consider meds as a cure.

We stutterers/stammerers are skilled seekers. You will find what you are looking for.

Be strong and don't forget to breathe.

Bwelling, that's what i need, some form of relief. I figure i stutter more because of how i feel & if i can just be able to speak without holding the word in my head, i may see a big improvement.

I've been on The Starfish which i didn't really find helped as the way i feel is too over powering which means i need more then just a tool on how to breath, i do however think that when combined it may be useful.

Mr F. - I don't know whether it's that time of year or not, but I've been noticing more than normal "cures and success stories" from stammers/stutters. I can only wish them well and remain a skeptic.

I wish you well - keep the rest of us informed of your journey.

I suppose it's what you consider success really. I'd be happy to feel good about myself & not have that fear, with that i hope i can remove all the bits i've added on over the years as my worst habit is stammering even before i've spoken.

This is an interesting read about stammering & medication.

Just to add;

To be fair, i havn't really heard about many success stories from individuals only websites & company's like Speecheasy & Voice amp. With the medication you get some really interesting answers & they will explain it's not a cure but something that's helping them. :)

Right, a while since i made this thread and......I still can't get medication. Gp says he doesn't feel comfortable prescribing them & the consultant says i don't need them, even tho the stammering's took over my life for the past however many years?

The GP is sending a letter to say he needs to see me & when he does i want to make sure i take the ones that i want as you can already see the consultant knows very little about stammering so i don't want some random drugs.

The ones people have tried varie so how will i know what's right for me? Where do you start? Some people have 2x medications some have one etc etc?

Much appreciated.
