View Full Version : Valsalva maneuver and stuttering

I've been looking around and came upon something called the "valsalva maneuver" that is somehow tied into stuttering. I don't understand it all but basically it says that if you want to get past a block you need to relax your abdomen because the abdomen muscles (and a few others) are tied directly into speech so when those muscles are relaxed your speech will be relaxed too.

Does anyone use this? I think I'm going to try it and see what happens.

What a concept! Someone has some ideas about stuttering therapy and writes a book, sells it inexpensively, and donates the profits to the NSA. Plus we don't see the author coming on the stuttering discussions boards to push his ideas!

Anyway, I'm not saying I believe in the Valsalva hypothesis, but I respect the way Bill Parry is putting forth his ideas.
