Suppose you are a very bad stutterer.

Your home alone with a parent, or grandparent.

They collapse or need you to help save them...

With no one around to grab the phone from you to speak to 911, you are the only one there to call 911???

As an extreme stutterer, what do you do??

How do you get out critical info to the dispatcher to help save a family member or friend while being an extreme stutterer????

Keep in mind there is no one else home, and you live half a mile from any neighbor.

And yes, this is a serious post because this could happen in real life.

As a very nasty stutterer, the situation frightens me that it would ever happen.

This used to worry me, too, but if you make an emergency call and can't say anything, they'll still come over because they can trace your location. There are any number of emergencies where a person might not be able to talk or might have trouble getting the information they need to get out out, like if a little kid calls 911 or somebody is having a bad asthma attack. I think emergency workers are probably used to dealing with that, and they'll send somebody over even if you can't explain what the problem is.

In my country there is no 911. And because of the strict privacy laws nobody can trace a call unless the cell phone has been reported stolen and you have a police abstact to prove it.
I remember when my gf went into premature labor and I was still in Sudan. She called on the SAT fone and left a message in the middle of the night.
(y do babies like being born in the middle of the night?)
Anyway I had to wake up a workmate to call the hospital in Nairobi to ask about her. I wanted to ask so many questions, but I couldnt. I was crying bcoz I was so worried about her and frustrated that I couldn't ask what I wanted fast enough. SAT fones cost like 12 dollars a minute. Then I had to get him to call the travel agency to get me on a flight into Nairobi...its was one of the most harrowing nights of my life.
I worry about that stuff alot Happy.

I have found that in high pressure situations when my adrenaline starts pumping, I can get the words out fairly quickly. It is usually quite choppy, but at least I get the point across.

Nate I couldn't imagine being in your shoes in that situation. I have been very lucky that I have been very close to my wife during all 3 of my children's births.

Feel for ya there Nate.. I thought it was bad enough anticipating my last childs birth, I felt guilty because I was spending so much time worrying about calling the midwife when she went into labour when I should have just been worried about my wife. But compared to what you went through was nothing.

When it happens, deal with it.

Why worry about something that might or may not happen

Happy - cool name you've got there.

What do the numbers after your name mean - are you bragging or something :D

The month of my birthday is 7, the day is 11, and 7 is just a random number..

What I would've done when I closet stuttered if that was my fear is this:

I would've written a letter to the police, fire, etc; dept NOW--letting them know my speech situation--requesting their fax # or alternate, non-verbal contact information.

'Now, however, I know that fear is irrational for a number of reasons-- Still, it's a REAL feeling to yOU that you must FEEL until it's gone.. LET IT GO !

u can always whisper u don't stutterer when ya whisper just whisper loud.

i don't think u would stutter in that situation i think stuttering is the act of holding back soif you really needed to say it i doubt u would be thinking i'm goig to stutter etc

It means..that feelings move through you.
In Western culture, we generally learn to SUPRESS our feelings by either burying them down..or doing something to change them [eating, drinking, smoking, calling a friend for a pep talk etc;]-- These activities bury the feeling down..and then the next time someone brings up that feeling, they are "pushing your button"--and you attempt to supress again. Anxiety is not emotion; it is FEAR of emotion--the panic and things you do to avoid having to FEEL that emotion. Alternatively, you might learn to ACT OUT on your emotion.. but here's the thing:
-Say someone does something that makes you feel *angry*..and you EXPRESS your anger..How are you going to feel the NEXT time they do the same thing? More angry or less angry? Obviously, more-- You've established a "button" and they push it.. and how are you goign to feel if you SUPRESS your anger the next time they do it? Angry again.. pushed the button.
These buttons are stored..you can literally feel the emotion starting to "come up" [typically around the solplex]-- and then your automatic behavior to keep it down or express it goes into effect.
But the real "secret" to CLEARING out these "buttons"--is to FEEL them-- to neither supress them nor to act on them-- Instead, to simply feel your feelings..feel the full physical emotional "ick" in your solplex..and just breathe.. until it burns away..[this may take practice]--- and then your "button" will be gone...and you'll walk around that much less anxious--In time, you will begin to get excited about having your "buttons pushed"-- knowing that something else can now be cleared out of your system...

I use to be a paramedic... (yes I am a stutter and yes I purposely took the job :) ) At first I was very nervous about the entire emergency situation (AND TALKING ON THE RADIO especially when you realize that alot of people scan those frequencies). Anyway I suspect this experience totally altered how I view my stuttering... However, I did find that if I spoke with a Southern Twang I did not stutter... lol... anyway... it is amazing how much a stutter can say when it really needs to be said...
