When I was in College and even with my job and meetings I would have to introduce myself (first day of class, etc...).
One time at ASU we had to introduce ourselves, tell our majors and why we took the class. I basically humilated myself - took forever to say anything!
I also could tell you guys stories of when I was in the Army. The military is not the place to be if you stutter. I thought bootcamp would "straighten my speech out" - wrong.
Anybody alse have specific instances of humilation?

All throughout school years so far, Having to introduce yourself infront of the class. At fmaily gathering and a ceremony i was involved in (luckily there was only like an hour where i had to speak). Meeting new people in general. I stutter on the first letter of my name so then they would ask for example if my actual name was s-s-loth. Not fun.
I think I'm the only one here who doesn't struggle with my name. My name is Tessa and my last name starts with a V (I actually struggle a lot on 'V's) but I never struggled on my name  It's really weird, but I don't think those words (of my own name) are hard to say. I do struggle on the first two words ('I am', which is in Dutch = Ik ben). I think that's because it's in the beginning of the sentence, and after that most words are a lot easier for me to say. But I think it also depends on my name, the 'T' isn't always so hard for me to say. I do find difficulty in names like Charissa (I can't say that name :( ), Chatila (That's my best friends' name, not very handy), Anita etc.
As a child my first name was Michael, which I could not say at all.
It plagued me throughout my childhood. I wonder how many thousands of times a child has to say his/her name?
But Lo and Behold it turned out that my real name was not Michael at all. I found this out when I applied for my first passport, and was informed I did not exist. My surname was not my real name either!!!
So at that late date, I was made aware that my name was something I could actually manage to say :)
I should have murdered my mother, really. Oh well...
Asif.

I'm going to a conference next week for my job and I'm scared they'll make us do introductions.
It sucks to have to live in fear like this.

dont think about the conference to much...
i had to stand up in court and face the judge, jury, media and the defendent etc.
i blacked out everything(well most).
and the experience for me in court went well.
hope this helps.
the more you think about the situation you face ahead the more you will feel nervous and you will end up stuttering.

I have a story on when i Took a call in my job which is a training center for people with learning disabilites. Istarted to stammer and the staff on the other end of the line asked to speak to one of the staff thinking that i was one of the lads with a learning disability. i tried to stay calm as i explained to this person that i was in fact the acting manager and that i had a stammer not a learning. disability.

Most people i talk to on the phone can't believe I'm the supervisor in my dept. either. Sometimes they'll ask to speak to someone else which is humiliating.

Thanks for the kind words MOS.
I can already feel myself stuttering now, the adrenaline rush, everything.
It sucks.
Don't you love it when you're asked to introduce yourself in front of other people and they start at one end of the room and you have wait as they get closer and closer to you.
This conference is in Vegas - normally Vegas is cause for celebration - not this time.

OMG Yes, because for me, I just want to be first or middle, so i can get it out the way, when I have to wait last, Im all breathing, all speaking to myself in my head, telling myself, that is ok, then when the time comes for me to introduce, I just Freeze totally lol, and I have to just not think about it, and not think about ppl being there ...
I hate introductions too, but where I am now with my stammer, is definatly a step up, two years u think I would even attempt to go for a job, speak out in class, do class activities, answer the phone, ask for things Hell No lol

I hate when people ask for me to say my name. My first name is 3 syllables and my last name is 2 syllables. Sometimes I can say my name easily but a lot of times I mess up badly.
It's bad enough when I have to say my name, but I hate when people ask me to repeat my name. It's a name a lot of people haven't heard since it's russian. A lot of times people even ask me to spell it. How much embarrassment can those people cause me? Asking to say my name twice, then even spelling it. Maybe I should just walk around with a name tag everywhere!
There have been times where it actually took me a couple minutes to get out my name. Those were so embarrassing.
Why can't we stutters get names that just start with 1 syllable or 1 single letter lol. :)

I had a humiliating experience last Friday. I was at a conference maybe about 12 people in the room.
We had to introduce ourselves, I was the last one and blocked really bad. Then I mumbled something about having a speech problem then tried saying my name again - big mess.
I have to face these people next week too. Really sucks.

Some people on this forum have said to tell people you have a speech problem/impediment before speaking to them. Well, what I don't understand is that if you have a hard time speaking as it is, wouldn't it instantly be obvious to the listener anyways? If you manage to get it out without no problem, then the listener will just be waiting for you to stutter instead of listening to what you have to say.
