People tend to 'freak out' less--when you admit what you're anxious about instead of trying to hide it.
HOWEVER, if we tell the teacher or whomeever "hey, I stutter.. I'm nervous--Watch me be nervous"--or anything like that.. we affirm our nervousness, our helplessness--and we simply perform nervously as predicted w/ an audience..
But what about when your self-talk is different? If you have any kind of technique that prevents stuttering, you'd still feel that way--but you could then tell the teacher something to the effect of "I am overcoming* [notice the difference in self-talk/affirmation] stuttering..and I have this technique that I use.. when I use it correctly, I don't stutter..but when I'm really nervous or trying to hard to hide my stuttering, I don't always use it correctly.. This is the technique.. and I intend to use it excellently [show the teacher]-- also, if possible, when I'm introduced for the speech-- I'd love it if the introducer could mention the technique and how hard I'm working on overcoming stuttering--so I know the audience will EXPECT me to use the technique"
This changes everything.

tell the teacher/lectuerer, when i told her she told me i dont have to do it but i did it anyways it was a 2 minute speach...took me 10 minutes :P i was so red in the face, but i didnt care, at least everyone else knows that i stutter.
The last time i was speaking in front of a class was maybe two or three years ago, i was terrified and it didnt go well. Next time will be at some point in the future, i know i'll be terrified again, but i've promised myself i'll do better next time, even thou only the idea of the situation makes me soo nervous. but i think telling about your stutter to your teacher could help a little, make you more relaxed maybe?
has anybody here told before the presentation to the audience that you stutter? i think i'd like to try that the next time, people would then expect me to stutter and i wouldnt have to worry about it that much.

I will have to give oral presentations soon for my classes, I am going to tell my teacher about it, and announce that I stutter to the class before I start my presentation (eek!) If they can't handle it, they are in the wrong major (SLP). :)
thanks for all the feed back I think i will tell the teacher and see how it goes.

My title sounds kinda silly, but when I was in high school, I convinced the school to wave that requirement. The school insisted that the stuttering would not impact my grade... yet stammering would impact my friends grades... I felt that was not fair. My fight was over personal ethical issues.. that being said.... I later found in life that communication is key to success. I have since worked as a paramedic, was a TA in graduate school, and some what commonly talk before large crowds.... I start everytalk with.. "For those who don't know me, I stutter. I have lived with it my entire life, now you get to live with it for a short period." I also do not mind if people finish my words, so I also say, "If I get stuck, and point to you, say the word, and I'll be able to say it right after you!". It lightens the mood and places everybody at ease. Simply put... you are part of a unique group of people.... don't be ashamed and don't try to hide it... Trust me on that... after 42 years I have learned that hiding it NEVER EVER works..lol...
