I have always found that after playing a sport such as football ("soccer" to some of you!) my speech would improve greatly afterwards. I think this is because of the breathing control you need to maintain during any sport, my throat becomes better lubricated and also it helps to relieve stress.

I also find that my stuttering is worse in the mornings before I have had time to "warm up". If I dont have a phone call, a meeting, or even a chat with someone in the my office early in the morning, I can get more anxious and stressed, and my speech can deteriorate when speaking situations do materialise.

Anyway, recently I have started getting up 30 mins earlier and going for a jog around the village where I live (it has helped that the weather has been great here in England recently!). I have found that this wakens me up, gets my breathing working better, and generally gets my speech system a lot better prepared for work.

Just thought I would share this with you. I know a lot of people say that yoga and meditation can help with breathing and relieving stress, but I find general sport and exercise very good.

Thanks for sharing the info. I usually am not a morning person and do not prefer to talk in the mornings. I never thought of it as you have proposed. I also find it easier to talk after excercising.

Very interesting, Riverman.

I believe I'm the exact opposite. Breathing hard leaves me with a shortness of breath, my throat closes up and my stuttering gets worse.

On the other hand, singing in a hot shower seems to relax my throat enough for me to become more fluent for a few hours.

Back in high school, I did cross country and indoor and outdoor track....so i've been running for quite some time now and I'm probably gonna continue in college.

Anyways, when I run in cold whether, I can barely say a word afterwards and if i can then it's all slurred together, which sounds awful. As for when the temperature is average or hot outside....i'm not sure if it helps with my stuttering or not.

Hey,

You know I think you have something there Riverman. I used to bike to work everyday and I noticed an improvement in my speech. Unfortunatly I have stopped biking everyday as I work too far away, but I have noticed my speech has got worse. Not sure if this is a coincidence or not.

As for finding speech hard directly after a bike ride, yes I did find this, because I was out of breath, but after I got my breath back things were fine.

I'm currently reading a book about the McGuire program and they teach costal breathing.

I think I may have to jump back on my bike daily!!

I would find refraining from exercise really hard, if I am not on my bike or going to the gym at least once a week I am not a happy bunny.

I used to do MTB but am now strictly a roadie with my slicks on my mountain bike.

It also helps me clear the cobwebs and gives me some of 'me time'.

I did a 54 mile bike ride from Liverpool to Chester and back to Liverpool, this entailed cycling through two tunnels under the river Mersey which had been closed off to cars for the event and it was a sweltering day, I managed to do it in 4 1/2 hours and loved every minute of it except the cramp at 42 miles and having to stop a few times after that to try and get rid of it. I didnt do it for charity but just for the buzz of competing in it.
I found the MTB too intense for me and my seat isnt the most comfortable. Give me a road with hills and I am in my own little piece of heaven.

I began doing yoga a few months ago, and usually for an hour or 2 after, my breathing seems to be more relaxed and is a BIT easier to speak fluent. but sometimes at beginning in class, they ask to introduce themselvess and i choke up sometimes and get super nervous when announcing my name, argh.
