View Full Version : If you could choose ONE WORD to not stutter on

Imagine you are given the option to choose one single word that, for the rest of your life, you will never stutter on. You will be able to say this word completely fluently at all times. What word would you pick?

My choice would be "thanks". I think it's the one word that I use the most when talking to strangers. Think about it: pretty much any time you spend money somewhere, you are obliged to say "thanks" upon receiving your change and/or receipt. When I stutter on this word, I feel like the other person thinks I'm rude or ungrateful for not thanking them.

My name, hands down. It's so weard that we all stutter on it the most, that it is so common, yet we all have different name's. I really think this throws out the window the argument that it's only some letters or vowels people stutter on, I think it has nothing to do with that at all...

Thanks for me too actually.

Everybody knows me. In fact I almost never have to say my name. Most of the time I hear, "Jersey, theres someone here to see you" or "Nate, meet so and so".

Yep, i say that alot and stammer on it alot.

I can definitly relate to what you are saying here. I find that I am often in a position where I need to say that word, mainly in shops like you mentioned. Usually I can get it out ok but sometimes there will be a delay while I am blocking and the clerk/staff member probably thinks I am rude while the block is going on.

My first thought was my name too, kind of leaning toward "hello" or something, to greet someone back if they say hi to me first

When I saw the question, I was going to say "my name," but I completely understand the reason behind "thanks." So now I'm not sure which.

My girlfriend's name would be nice not to stutter on, too.

Is that her in that photo? She's gorgeous. You lucky . haven't you read the manual? Stutterers have to be antisocial. You're now banned from this forum. :D

actually i change my mind, i can say my name usually pretty well... but the sound that iam helpless on is any word with st or sn or a s and then a hard sound so if i could pick a sound not to stutter on it would have to be that. i cant say the word stutter haha

The word "necessary" for me. I can say most words that are two syllables or less quite effortlessly. But for words like "necessary" I can't even remember the last time I used that word without stuttering.
"Necessary" not only has 3 syllables but it makes you repeat the "S" sound which I block on 80% of the time.

"you too" is a hard one for me.

"You too" is not so bad for me if it starts of as "thanks", but I switch it. Like I'll slur or faze out like, "thaan, you too"

Look up the "Gentle Onset" strategy... it is helpful.

"Easy Onset" is described in the section "stuttering easily" (which is under "the all important ground rules") in the book Self Therapy for the Stutterer.

I wish! No, it's Sheldon. Like the egg that didn't hatch in the Garfield cartoons. When I was a kid that's what everyone always told me when I said my name. So yeah, I hate my name. Damn hippie parents! Oh well, I've had it for 23 years, I might as well keep it.

Is there a warranty on names? :D

Oh and I just realized, even though my name is Sheldon and I stutter, I am totally not a nerd. Just a dork. I'm too damn cool to be a nerd hehe.

Probably my name. Everyone is suppose to be able to say their name with no problem. They hear it, write, and say it all the time. When you block on it, people think you forgot your name. That is SO insulting and embarrassing. Your name plays an important role in meeting people too.

James80

I agree- My name. I usually say Arrrrr Jim. But then I think people think- who doesnt know their own name.
The words I struggle with use the same same mouth movement- Juh, Duh, Buh, Guh. I am sure somebody has a theory about this.
I read something about a guy that changed his name to something he didnt stutter on and then began to stutter on that word.

I'm bad with 'm's, in combination with other sounds, such as 'military'. That one really brings on a block. 'L's also trip me up, routinely.

Pretty much the only word (okay, two words) that I ever consistently stutter on (my stutter's quite unpredictable like that) are biomedical science, the degree that I'm doing at uni. So, because of this, whenever I run into an old mate from back in highschool or something, it appears that I'm so immensely retarded, or stoned at the time, that I'm unable to recall what degree I'm doing: uhhhhhh...uhhhhh... b-b-b-b-biomedical s-s-science.

Most people who stutter have trouble saying their name. I sometimes have trouble too. So probably I would choose my name. But the word "thanks" is good too. If I could choose 2 words, I would choose both of them! ;)

Isnt it horrible that we will actually think about calling ourselves something other than our own name just because of the stutter that might come out of it? I think it is awful. What if you came to be friends with that person later on or see that person somewhere else with a friend, and they called you adam, your friend would be like..hmm..ok lol

'Yes' is my word. I hate it when you say 'yes' and then they ask you again just in case or something and your forced to stammer out a 'yes' again. Being able to say yes would also solve the problem of class registers even though 90% of the time I'm able to control such situations.

I once spent a good few minutes stuck on the second "B" and kept repeating the first "B". I was with some close friends who accept my stutter but even they were laughing and when I explained I fell about laughing as well. You've gotta laff.

For me, it was hard saying "hello" when answering the phone and everytime I would answer it I would be trying my hardest to say "hello", if they knew me they would say how are you doing and know it was me automatically.
It was the same thing with my phone, but I realized that I was just scared that I was going to stutter so I just stopped caring. People already knew I stuttered, so why be worried? After I stopped worrying I began to say my name and being to answer the phone without a problem.
Is it just me or is it hard for you guys and girls to say words that start with vowels? It's hard for me to say a word that begins with an "o"
