I listened to a radio documentary tonight about music and the brain (http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/features/theNerve/). At one point, they mentioned dopamine (I hope I spelled that right) and how it relates to music.

They explained how dopamine was the 'feel good' chemical in the brain and it made me wonder if stutterers are more perceptive to music or more music lovers than non-stutterers? Seeing that higher levels of dopamine is seen as a cause of stuttering.

A silly notion I know but I am a HUGE music lover. In fact, my mood is influenced by the music I am hearing. For instance, if I'm in a restaurant and a song comes on that I don't like, I get in an irritated mood. If the place is playing music I enjoy, I'm the life of the party.

Just wondering if anyone else here is the same?

I love music too...
Especially love songs...and Ballads. But Not Opera.
Or Heavy metal. Or Crunk.
Love songs make me feel...amorous. Idk about the dopamine part.

Metal has always played a significant role in my life. At one point I was doing vocals in a black metal band, that meant getting infront of an audience btw lol. I am currently working on a new project with an ex member of my previous band. Metal is where I have vented my frustration, hate, and anxiety all these 17 years. Many dark days.......

But reflecting on my origins and family roots has given me a stronger purpose to live, to be proud!!!

Nobody can take that away from you.

Very interesting topic...I too play bass, Egyptian-style tabla (Hince the avatar) and several other instruments.

Being a dancer too, musicality is very important. Others say that I seem to really hear the music, more than the average dancer and that I'm able to really draw emotionally from the music.

I'm curious if...stutterers tend to have a better connection with music than the average person???

Oh my gosh you sound just like me. Music is my life and I've played piano since I was 5. I stutter really bad if the situation pressures me enough like saying my name and sometimes you can't hardly tell I have a problem. I've played in my church since I started playing and people tell me I can tear it up. I do the same like in a restaurant. When I hear a slow song with what I think is a depressing mood, it makes me feel horrible for the rest of the day:eek: and if its just one I simply don't like, I feel irritated too, and yes if its one of my very favorite up tempo songs I'm the life of the party and I'm in the best mood.

I'm definitely a HUGE music lover too. I also find that when I'm singing I'm ALWAYS fluent, even when I try to rap lol (not saying that I'm into rap or anything, or that there's anything wrong with rap >.<)
Music also helps me to calm down before e.g. a presentation. And if I sing before I make a phone call I find myself more fluent when I'm ringing.
