i am currently working in a university. There's this college boy who passed by my office. He was so down. They had a group activity in class. Their group was the last to finish and as a "punishment" every member will sing in front. Now this young man has a mild stutter too. His prof. is aware of this. He tried to start singing but then when he was able to sing the first sentence, his prof. told him to sit. This boy was so shaken, he felt so embarrased. He cried in the toilet. (That's how he found my office) I guess he needed someone to talk with. I listened to him for over an hour. I told him that I also stutter. I wanted to comfort him and tell him its alright but I know its not. I've been in that situation too. I don't want to offer tips and sound fake, so I just listened while my heart breaks. How can I help students who stutter when I myself stutter too?:(

I'm confused...he has to sing? Most people don't stutter when they sing.

he was so nervous. he did not stutter while singing it. took him a while before he was able to sing. when finally he was able to sing the first line his prof. told him to sit down, like he was cut off.

Please , tell him not to worry or cry. Tell him to be positive about the stuttering always. I am also a mild stutterer and I am also studying in university .Well, my stuttering has not affected me much. Thanks to God , I am one of the brilliants and top in my class. I even conduct study classes with most of my female colleagues and boys, tutoring and helping them with their problems .
I know the pain of stuttering, tell the young man to be positive with his colleague and should try to interact with them more.
Bye
Tell him to work through Self Therapy for the Stutterer by Malcolm Fraser http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=630 as well as make an appointment to talk to the teacher to tell him/her about stuttering. Teachers are not educated about stuttering and need to learn how to help the student who stutters rather than hinder their education. Most of the tips on the brochures at www.stutteringhelp.org are ed at young children and teachers of young children. Perhaps this student can print out pages from the website that will help his/her teacher and class understand stuttering and learn how to help. If inappropriate treatment still persists, he needs to talk to the head of the department or dean of students (if there still is such a thing). The way that teacher is treating him/her is a form of harassment.
Situations like this seriously make me cry
I remember my days in school and those retarded teachers who didnt know a thing about stuttering kids, some even thinking I was doing it to make fun of them.
This brings us to the lack of education and training in this matter. Why wouldnt the teachers take a 1 hour course to at least realize that stuttering is a condition and has to be dealt with patiently. fortunately for me, my classmates were really cool with it even tho they were just kids. Sometimes kids can understand whole a lot more than educated adults.

Many people, yes, are not educated at all about stuttering. But teachers are people students are supposed to look up to to be open about anything. And for a teacher to go out of their way to shut someone up who stutters is worse than another student just teasing him about it. He was put down in front of the whole class. That is a huge deal. He should definitely have a talk with his professor about it. I know it's scary to do that, especially if he isn't used to talking about his stutter, but it needs to be done.
If you do see him again when classes start backup, have a chat with him. There is lots of great advice in this forum if you look, so keep visiting :)
