View Full Version : Anybody tend to avoid going drinking with friends?

Well I'm 19 years old and everyone I know tends to hit the clubs every Saturday and go drinking. I use to make a habbit of it myself and did enjoy it until my stuttering got worse. The last few times I went I found it hard to enjoy due to my stutter. I didn't feel confident ordering drinks and god forbid speaking to people!
Because loud music is being played you have to yell to speak. And for some reason when i yell, or speak loudly my stuttering seems to be worse than when I'm speaking softly.
So all this paranoia doesn't make it too enjoyable really... which is a shame because I really want to enjoy it and do it more but stuttering stops me. It's been ages since I last went out drinking I just accept the fact that I'll probably not enjoy it due to stuttering. Clubbing is such a massive part of young culture over here in England that come Saturday nights i tend to feel a bit of a loner/anti-social sat in my room when others are out enjoying themselves. My friends don't realize I don't go out much because of my stutter, they just think I don't like drinking, or anti-social or something. People don't realize how much stuttering affects your life in EVERY aspect. I'd be such a better person and live such a better life without it... All my potential is being trapped inside myself thanks to stuttering.
Just thought I'd get that off my chest.

i can totally relate to what you are saying. i kept to myself for 37 years. not wanting to go out or do ANYTHING because i had to talk and knew i would stutter. being home was my safest place...so i thought. i was promoted to management with my job, just recently, and i finally made it a point to seek help(again) and really make a differance in my personal, social, and job life. i can say the best thing i ever did was start telling people tht i was a PWS. the response was and still is overwhelming how much support i have gotten. not to mention the relief of knowing when i do stutter, it's really not a big deal to others. i stutter openly and honestly now. people find stutterig interesting and want to know more about it. this is an oppurtunity to teach them.
Well I used to be a total circuit boy/club kid. I loved pills and I loved dancing! It was awesome fun.
Lately though I've been more of a homebody and just hanging out with my friends, and not doing much. I don't really like bars much anymore. I don't have tons of money anymore. The clubs around here are shit, anyways, even the ones.

Isn't a homebody someone who stays home a lot?
I avoid going to bars with my friends because I don't drink. :P

Well yeah, I'm . Most people go to bars hehe. :p
Emily is right, homebody's don't like going to bars usually. I used to like it, but I burnt myself out on it. I'll go every once in awhile just to have some fun, but I have other ways to have fun besides drinking my money away.
I suppose I could be a homeboy too, I've never really thought about it.

I've struggled in bars for years. Always tried to avoid ordering the drink I wanted if I thought I was going to stumble on it, and rarely had the guts to start a conversation with anyone let alone a woman I was interested in.
Now, I still have the same issues, but it's easier than it used to be. I wear my stutter on my sleeve and deal with rejection. It hurts, yes, but the way I see it, if someone isn't into talking to me for that reason, and I can usually tell by their reaction, then they are not worth my time and energy worrying about. They mean nothing to me. And so I move on. And believe me I didn't just feel like this overnight.. it took me years to get to this perspective.
I would rather talk loudly over music than talk quieter in a silent room. A silent room really makes me crumble, b/c everyone can hear every little sound I make. And I make some disturbing noises sometimes :p All my breathy sounds, my grumbles and spittles.. oye.
The problem with clubs is the bartenders work at such a fast pace, that if you don't get what you want out right away there's a good chance they will yell "YEAH????" or "CMON SPIT IT OUT IVE GOT OTHER PEOPLE WANTING A DRINK HERE!!". Or they can just walk away from you, which has happened to me. Ah, fun times fun times. Sometimes I order bud lights b/c they are easier for me to say, and I HATE Bud. lol :D

If you can just order a few drinks and get tipsy your muscles will loosen up and you'll probably stutter less. When I'm drunk my stutter is very mild.

I hate staying home alot, so I try to get out alot. But I am not a bar visiter either. I do eat out to restaurants alot, and go out shopping.
If I do order a drink from a bar in those rare occasions, I usualy see how crowded it is first.

I order Bud Light too because it's easier to say! I also hate it. :D It tastes like battery acid. I do like some beers just not that crap.
I've had to put up with many things I don't like because I ordered the easiest thing to say. At bars, clubs, and restaurants. I hope it doesn't happen to me at a movie theater, yikes.

I stuttered less when I drank and the yelling over the noise never bothered me and I never had a problem ordering what I want. I'm curious, can most of you carry on conversations and not stutter or do you stutter every time you speak?

I'm like that too...I hardly stutter when I order food/drinks, get drunk, or have to talk loud.
And I don't stutter every time I talk...my stuttering is very situational. When I'm at home or just kicking it with my homies I'm ALMOST 100% fluent...but whenever I have to talk to someone I don't know, then I find it a lot harder to speak.

I'm pretty fluent too and only stutter when talking to new people sometimes and I'm worse on certain letters or words but I'm so used to it that I hardly even notice anymore because it happens so automatically for me. I have a problem with certain names, even my own name, when making appts. I usually spell my name, same as with my street name too and I usually get stuck on my city too but I think it's the using the phone that does it, why is it such a problem for us to use the phone, you would think it would be easy because we can't see the person who we are talking to. I have been stuttering for so long that it's a part of me and I don't let it stop me from doing what I want. I let people know I have a stuttering problem too, it helps and I work in retail and am constantly talking to strangers and I think that makes a difference too, it gets you out there among people but I don't like retail and am going to school for medical coding.

ah the peer pressure, be part of the in crowd. When the music was loud and had a few drinks, i found myself to be fluent. I order what ever i wanted and danced, but not good enought to be dancing with the stars. LOL!!!! I am hardly home, because i got too much on the go but i still enjoy the odd drink, when i am relaxing at home.

I can carry on a conversation most of the time. It does depend on the person listening to me though. Some people have tolerance for my stutter and others do not. But I do stutter 90% of the time when I open my mouth. My speech is totally unpredictable. I never know when I am going to have trouble. It can be with anyone at anytime, and also on any word or any sound. Although there definitely are certain sounds I have less problems with, and the same goes with certain people I talk to.
I get into transitional stages with my speech in which it can get either better or worse. They come and go all the time. I am in a time where it is back to being bad again, hence why I am here on this forum. I feel like I need to do more than.. let me see... nothing! :D I do breathing exercises, but my discipline in doing them has never been strong enough to stick with it.
I am not any better or worse on the phone. Probably better if anything b/c I cannot be seen in person.

My stuttering is 100% shit all the time.
I am never ever fluent in some conversations because I'm always disfluent. To say it pissed me off is putting it mildly.

Now, now Happy. It can't be shit ALL of the time. Everyone has good days and bad days. I talked to a stutterer on the phone, who had severe dis-fluency. I bet he doesn't think he has 100% shit fluency.
Man, you have a very negative outlook on life, which fuels your dis-fluency. You won't be fluent if you keep thinking your fluency is 100% shit. I don't think I've met a person who is as negative as you are. Online or in real life. I mean I have my bad days but you take the cake. :p

You shouldn't avoid drinking. It's one of our few escapes as a person who stutters. When you get enough alcohol in you...hell, I don't have to explain this to you. First drink, (don't tell me you're afraid to order a beer) then talk. Alcohol is not called a social lubricant for nothing.
Even if I wanted to order something that was different to drink than my friends, I would sometimes comp out and point at my friends drink and the bartender would know that I'll have the same.
If I have to yell my order because it's a loud club/bar, forget out it!
If it's a good day and I want a Molson Canadian, I would just say "Canadian please" and every bartender in Toronto would know what your talking about.

Well from past experience getting drunk hasn't seemed to help me speak better oddly enough. Which is a shame because it means I can't even get wasted just so I can speak fluently for a while.

Doesn't boost my speech either. I think it makes it worse, but it helps attitude-wise.
Yeah booze doesn't help my fluency either. It makes me stutter more sometimes. Drugs are the only thing that's worked for me hehe. :o

Have you ever tried Dos Equis? It's a Mexican beer I think and it's 100 times better than Corona!

There is a beer produced in Pennsylvania that I like, it's called Yaengling. It's the best stuff I've ever had. I used to get it all the time when I lived there.

Don't worry, unlike most s I don't get offended over every thing.
