Hey y'all,
I have a question for you guys. Do you suffer from low self confidence or low self esteem? Feeling of no self worth at times? Cause i do and am not sure whether it is stuttering related or just some other mental problem.
Need your replys also if its a 'yes' or a 'no'.
Thanks

Hi,
In my opinion low sef- confidence & low self esteem are the common qualities found in most of the stutterers so there is nothing unusuall wrong with u.

I've stuttered for 29 years and I can tell you that my self esteem and self confidence are currently almost non existent. In my case, it is due in part to stuttering and part from a tough upbringing. Put lack of self esteem and self confidence together with self hatred and guilt, and it has lead to depression and anger.
I've been in psychiatric therapy for several years and I'm just now starting to think that maybe I'm not such a bad guy and maybe it wasn't all my fault for my parents' treatment, especially my dad's inability to deal with my stuttering.
No self esteem or self confidence has lead to no social life and few friends. Frankly, at 36, it isn't easy for me to get back into social activities and the chances are slim right now of finding a woman to be with.
For anyone going through similar circumstances, get help as soon as you can. I wish I'd seen a psychiatrist years ago, maybe I'd be in a lot better shape than I am now.

Thats a good suggestion Iced Tea.
I have never been to a psychiatrist ever. What would i have to go and tell them? Where i come from no one ever goes to psychiatrists......no one.
I have access to counsellor since i am at university, but my question is what do i tell them. I mean where do i start? you get what i'm saying?

I have access to counsellor since i am at university, but my question is what do i tell them. I mean where do i start? you get what i'm saying? My first interaction with anyone in the psychological field was when I approach a psych professor at college. That's how I started out; talked to one for 15 - 20 minutes, just talked about how stuttering was affecting my life, what it was doing to my self esteem and self confidence. The prof told me to talk to my doctor, I did and the next thing I know I'm having my head shrunk.
If I were you, I'd book an appointment with the counsellor and just tell the counsellor what you are thinking and feeling. You stutter and it's affecting your life and you need to talk to a qualified professional about it. He/she might want to just talk to you then or recommend you talk to some other person at the university or seek the advice or treatment from a doctor.

I believe it's much harder to cope with a stammer, if you lack confidence, all these things Im doing now, two years, you think I would attempt to do, Hell No ... and it was because I didnt have confidence within myself, I felt that if I speak out, ppl will clock on that I stammer, and laugh at me, it always the fact that I didnt want other ppl to acknowledge I stammer, incase they didnt understand and laughed at me, but gettin a job, and speakin, u get to find out, there are ppl (non stammers) out there who do understand, and will take their time to listen to you
