hello, I am so nervous that I hardly imagine what will happen tomorrow's interview.
Damn, I hope the interviewer will not find my stuttering.
But I stutter more in telephone than face to face talking.
How can I do to show the interviewer my real ability?

Hi John,
Welcome to the forum and first of all I'd like to apologise that no one got back to you quickly, as I note that your interview was today.
I've stepped away for a while, but could not leave this unanswered, as you need help and thats what this place is supposed to be all about.
My advice for telephone interviews is as follows:
Make sure you research the company well and have the relevant facts and figures written down in front of you.
Try to predict what they are likely to ask you, so you can practice your 'standard' answers. ie you probably have a job spec for the role, so you will know what they should ask about skills and experience.
Slow down, dont feel rushed into saying anything off the top of your head, just listen to the question, think about your reply and be calm.
Write down as much as you can beforehand, its easier to read something
Try and formulate your words in your head before you say them.
Oh yeah, and breath!....try and get a good breath before each utterance - try not to have a shallow breath, as the words will sound choppy
And finally, smile, people can hear the difference in your voice when you smile.
I hope that it helps
Again, please accept the forums apologies for not getting back sooner

For all your other telephone calls in the future I suggest you to tell the people that you stutter. This makes it easier to get through. It's recommended when you have to make an important call like your interview.

Email the interviewer. Stutterers will not get a job if they stutter to much-we are discrimaned against.
The only way I got my current job was my mother knew the wife of the employer, and my father accompanied me on the interview.
Had I gone alone- I am almost certain that I would have not gotten that call back asking "when would you like to start".
Good luck though

A word of advice John...
Don't post anything negative or don't whine and complain, and don't not do anything to help yourself even after you have tried to help yourself..that kind of stuff makes Steve mad.
Oh, before Steve replies to me, he will say I am messed up!! Even with my 4.0!
Look to smart Steve for all the answers! He is an einstein at this stuff.
Yeah- I mean that.
Happy, why do you have to hijack John Woo's thread? It serves no purpose. You know what Steve has posted is the truth, and it's obviously got to you. Yet again you offer no advice, and tell John Woo to put forth the least amount of effort because you're scared of your stuttering. Sorry, but our parents can't hold our hands for the rest of our lives.
Mr. Woo, I hope your interview went great. We're all rooting for you here. Unfortunately one of the things everyone has to do to get a job is talk on the phone. It s, and I hate using phones. But if you know you can get the job, you will get the job. People can tell when someone has high self-esteem, and your dedication will show. Let us know how it went!
P.S. Are you the real John Woo? Can I have your autograph? ;)

If the interview fails, you might have been discrimnated against. Never take " you never got the job" for an answer.! Stick with it.
If my advice is meaningless and worthless, ignore it! No one is forced to follow advice on the forum!
Steve and SST have obviously formed a hatred for me without even knowing me personaly.
In reguards to SST:
I was expecting a reply from you--no wait, was that Steve!!
I am not hijacking, I am giving him a word of wording. But you think I'm hijacking because I'm calling worthless attention to myself. That's the way you think.
Steve has gotten to me alright...he seems like a very knoledgable guy, and he's wasting his energy barking at me!
True friends respect a person for who they are no matter how they are like. Obviously a chosen few on here don't fit that description.
Friends off the forum-we should be glad to have them.
Don't listen to Cranky-pants-that's me, listen to know-it-alls like Steve and Ssi.
Why are they know it all's because they know it all! Always having an an answer for everything.
I always have an answer for everything too, but I don't think I'm a know it all though.
I am a walking conondrum!
A smart person like SSI or steve knows what "conondrum" means I'm sure without needing a dictinary:cool:

Hi John,
One more thing I forgot to mention on my last post was
Dont try and hide your stutter - you will be putting too much pressure on yourself, what you should do is try and 'manage' your stutter by trying to produce eloquent speech.....dont for fluency, for eloquence.
Whats the worst that can happen at the interview?....they can say "No"....its not generally life or death, these people are strangers and only human like you.
Overcoming a stutter can also be seen as an advantage....it shows courage and commitment......to prove this, I was interviewed for a job a long while back, I tried my best, they offered me the job although I was not "100% fluent" at the interview.......a few years later, I was manager at the firm (it is possible to progress with a stutter) and I read the interview notes, and it said "the candidate had a stutter, but he handled it very well in a high pressure situation"
I now interview people.....even with a stutter, you can make it and be a succesful person, it just takes effort.
Hope that it helps John
btw - if you are the real John Woo, send me an autograph as well as sending one to sst !

Unfortunately one of the things everyone has to do to get a job is talk on the phone.
Fortunately this is not true.
Out of the 4 jobs I've had, only one required me to talk on the phone to get it. Fortunately it was shortly after therapy and I was relatively fluent at that time.

How else would you know you got the job if they don't call you? :p

Regarding job interviews, here in Germany it is forbidden to not give someone a job because he stutters. The laws here are much stricter than in the USA. That means the employer has to offer you an appropriate position in the company or department. But despite I'm worried about my future.
who the heck is John Woo?
And John, If u think u r going to stutter then u r. I just didnt want to re-inforce that thought in your head.or mine for that matter.
I hope it went well.

Even if you don't think if you will stutter before the call, you will stutter anyway. I don't mean that in a negative way, as others seem to take my comments as negative.
Godspeed and good luck.

Well, If it doen't bother you, would you like to add my :sd4174263@hotmail.com . Then we can commuciate with each other conveniently.
I think my last friday telephone interview wasn't too bad. I didn't tell him I stutter because I think everyone will know that after 10 minutes talking with me. This interview lasted for almost one hour. I stuttered in some special words, but it couldn't interfere with our chatting. when I felt blocks would happen, I would slow down my speed of talking. My interviewer was very patient and kind. When I finshed my conversation, I felt sweat streaming down my head. At last, he asked me to introduce myself in english.(I am a chinese)
I said merely little about myself and stuttered a lot because I haven't prepared for it . The interviewer said he would communicate with HR and decide whether give me a face to face interview next week. I hope I can win the chance.
Anyway, I tried my best to prepare for this telephone interview. Before interview, I perpared some useful tips which included some common questions he may ask me. I also printed it , and It seemed to work. I hold the paper in my hand during the interview preventing that I was too nervous to remember what to said.
One more interesting thing, some guys asked me if I was the real John Woo. Actually I think it is just a coincidence. But I have the same family name with this famous director .And what might make you more surprised is that we have the same ancestor in south china 500 years ago.
Even if you don't think if you will stutter before the call, you will stutter anyway. I don't mean that in a negative way, as others seem to take my comments as negative.
Godspeed and good luck.
have u watched Lost the TV series? They also also talk about the others.

Hi, Stevelaz
Thank you for your advice and encouragement. That's very thoughtful of you. I follow your advice and it really work. I think if I continue to practice according to your methods, there is every chance that I can improve my communicative skills sooner or later.
Thanks to all of you who give me the 'push' to success.

Phone interviews aren't so bad, so long as the interviewer calls me, and I am ready to take the call exactly when they call.
If I have to dial a phone, and introduce myself cold to someone interviewing me, or their secretary, that's what sends me into a panic instantly.

Hi John. I just want to say that I think it is better to tell people about your stammering. It also results in you stammering less because it will cause you to relax as well. Anyway I think we should stop being afraid of what these snobbish people. If people reject you because of your stammering, let them walk because you really dont need such people in your life anyway.
