View Full Version : Nervous Energy
My mum has always said I'm a nervous person, in the sense that I'm always fidgeting or moving my leg. I can on occasions find it difficult to remain perfectly still while sitting or laying down.
I'm curious as to if this is just me, or if it's a fairly common thing amongst those who stutter.
Cheers

I would challenge you to find proof that stutterers in general are more nervous that non-stutterers. I have only read that we do in general have more raised anxiety levels in speaking situations that non-stutterers. I sometimes speak very well in nervous situations and not so around people I have known for many years

People think I'm just nervous when I stutter. But that has never been the case. I do stutter a little more when I actually am nervous, but it is not the sole reason why I stutter.
As far as nervousness being normally present in stutterers, I personally don't think it has anything to do with stuttering. Everyone has a tick about themselves that relates or doesn't relate to something else. In your case, I can't say for sure. There can be many reasons for your nervousness... just don't automatically pin it to stuttering though :)

Not for me.
I actually stutter much less when I'm nervous because the "natural" thing for me to do is hide it.

Whether it's caused by the stutter, or whether it's just common in stutterers (just because the type of person they are; not because they stutter).

I have always been that way. I used to bite my nails, tap my foot, and you It's like a nervous tick. Since I've taken Paxil I've calmed down a bit. I do think my anxiety and stutter are related.

Yea I also stutter much less when I'm nervous, which has always seemed very strange to me. Class presentations were terrible when i was young, but as I got older I guess the pressure of being on the spot kicks in some extra adrenaline or something and I'm able to glide pretty decently though it. Interviews usually go fairly well for me as well, but then as soon as I'm just sitting around my house chatting with friends, I can barely piece together a sentence without a block or two.
Doesn't make much sense to me. It's like a mystery novel with no plot.

I'm pretty much always nervous. I'm what you'd call a scardy cat lol. When I have to do presentations or some sort of public speaking, I have panic attacks and just cry uncontrollably. And from the moment I find out I have to do public speaking (even introducing myself) I'm nervous and freaking out until it's all over. And those are just the stuttering related things that make me nervous. They're are more.
