I have an MBA. I did not find it particularly hard either with the workload or stuttering. There were a few profs who graded on participation and/or presentations, but they all gave me very good grades as long as I made an effort. I understand some of the top schools (Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, etc.) are very competitive and cutthroat. Those may be a different experience.

I'm not American, but despite I got curious about this. Why do you say these top schools would be a different experience for a stutterer? Do the guys at Stanford, Harvard and Columbia hate stutterers and make their lives miserable?
I think if you work hard, which you obviously have to do at these universities, they must give you the same chances like everyone else.

Maybe the students are meaner at top schools like these because they are so competitive? They try to put others down so they can get ahead? I have no idea...just thinking.

Sorry, if I sound like a communist, but if I could make the rules people who do that would be banned from a university.

Because usually in an MBA program you compete against your classmates so even if you get an 80 on a test, you still may get a bad mark. As a result they're very competitive and it's a dog eat dog environment. Adrian, can you comment on what recruiting events were like?

Sorry, but this sounds sick to my ears. I mean this whole system you have there. Well, in my country there is competition as well, but not that stark.

I have an MBA also...at the beginning my stuttering was very good but as school went out it did get much more competitive. My Profs were all VERY understanding so I wasn't stressed out grades, but the other students made it difficult. They assumed they were better/smarter than I was just because my presentation skills were not as smooth. That in turn made my presenting MUCH harder and my stuttering much worse. My last semester I actually had to see therapist because I was job interviewing and my stuttering was very bad through this because I knew I was competing for those jobs with the same students. I consider myself very smart and able but still have not found a job after graduation (a year and half ago). Blame it on the economy or people being close minded. Your choice.

After all that I would say it depends 1000% on your confidence level.

I second this request.

I'm having second thoughts about pursuing a career in the corporate world though. With the economy the way it is and my inherent communication disadvantages, I just don't know if I'm heading down the right path even with my strong interest in business.

I don't have an MBA (obv I made this thread! :D) but you usually need 2-3 years of work experience to get in an MBA program. There's also eMBA where you work fulltime while doing your MBA, but they are much more competitive and expensive.

Thanks for all the feedback from this thread! I hope you get an amazing job nik, it sure seems like you have a lot of courage and you def deserve it!

I think you are talking about the bell curve. This was not my experience in a middle of the road MBA program. As far as recruiting, stuttering made it challenging. In school no one really cares that you stutter. In the business world a employer may have concerns about how we present to a client and the bottom line. I found it challenging to find a good job, but I was patient and eventually did. I am sure you can do the same.

I have an MBA and just wanted to share my experiences. I did a standard MBA , not an eMBA (it was called Executive MBA at my school). Most of the people in the regular MBA classes were fresh out of undergrad or only a couple of years work experience. The eMBA's on the other hand were all executives with 10+ years of work. eMBA was much more expensive, but the students got to travel the world as part of their education.

As a stutterer the MBA was a little more difficult for me since I hate giving speeches, but I always managed to get them done and the students were very supportive. My fondest stuttering moment was going up to a teacher and talking to him about stuttering. I was worried he would think my stutter was uncertainty, compared to some other students who could speak at ease. The teacher said one of the nicest things anyone has ever told me, he said "it may take you a while to get through it, but at least what you're saying has substance. I wish I could say that for all the other BS I hear in class :)"

Another Important part of the MBA I can't stress enough is Networking, part of the the experience is to meet people you can be friends with and expand your network of contacts.

Regarding the posts earlier about competitive schools, it's true that at bigger schools students are SUPER competitive. I had a friend that went to Stanford and he told me students wouldn't discuss anything after class for fear of giving another student "an edge". That's quite a contrast from my college and MBA experience where everyone got along and helped each other out with our school work.

Thanks! I am still looking but hopefully one day it will all fall in place. I just feel like such a loser, all my friends tease me that I don't have a job bc they don't realize that my stuttering is prohibiting me from getting one. They tease me about being lazy instead even though in reality I hate sitting home all day! I hope that I find something soon because I graduated in Dec 2006! UGH!:(

I know how that feels... i'm 23 and havent had a real job in my life. I've been to tons of interviews, even big name companies like google but I still havent landed an internship. Some of the interviews I barely even stuttered (if at all). I'm CONSTANTLY being hounded by friends (and especially family) about not working. My family has such high expectations for me and its really depressing, even if I tell myself I don't care... deep down I do care which makes it that much worst.

Hopefully this summer will be the summer!

I graduated from a pretty decent law school, which probably requires as much public speaking as a MBA. How did I do gradewise? Horrible, because I was too scared to speak in class. I wish I had the confidence then that I do now.
