Hi, My name is Kayleigh and I’m 20 years old from England.

I would say im a mild-moderate stutterer, some days I can be fine and other days its just non stop stuttering. I don’t think a lot of people notice my stutter because I do try and cover it up. I’ll use different words that I know I can say without stuttering or i use “I can’t remember what I was going to say” which is always a good one! Or I wont contribute much to the conversation and just listen.

I’m not sure when my stuttering started but when I first started speaking I remember my parents saying to me that I didn’t have to speak so fast and that I have plenty of time to speak etc. I sometimes speak fast now just so I can get the words out in one go or when im feeling a bit nervous. I guess I’ve always stuttered.

Im currently in my last year of university, training to be a podiatrist. I sometimes stutter with patients but they just think its because I cannot pronounce a medication or condition properly and I have to admit I do sometimes use that when I am struggling or I’ll use a cover up “I can’t quite remember what its called” and then when I know I can say it without stuttering I’ll say it.

I work in a supermarket on the weekends, on the tills and for about the past year now I have been having problems with saying certain numbers, these numbers are: 52, 56, 57, 66, 67. Im not sure why these numbers but it is starting to get a little bit annoying, some of the customers just look at me as if im disabled, if you have ever had that look you will know what it feels like.

I don’t really have anyone to speak to about it, I have tried but they don’t seem to understand. They always say the same thing “I don’t really notice it and when I have I haven’t taken much notice” which is nice to know but not helpful.

The one thing I do not like to do is answer the home phone because I never know who is calling whereas on my mobile you can see the caller id and i don't like calling people I do not know, but once im on the phone im fine well sometimes but I am getting a bit better at it.

I’ve written quite a bit but I wasn’t sure how much or how little to write!

Thank you for reading.

Kayleigh x

Hello and welcome. I can relate to what you are saying as I am a closet stutterer aswell for the most part and mainly try to hide my stutter when possible. I also have trouble with certain numbers (11 being the worst which just happens to be my house number) and I don't like making phone calls.

closet stutterer

We would call you a "covert" over here in OZ and the opposite being "overt".

I am a bit nervous about it, but i have been practising so it shouldn't be too bad 10 mintues isn't too long but it's just the thought of actually doing it thats making me feel a bit nervous.

Hi, Kayleigh. It's Biochips1 from Youtube. :D I'm glad that you can finally post in this forum. Sorry that I haven't welcomed you earlier, but I had left this board for quite a while.

Hi Kayleigh,

It' insteresting what you say about you trying substituting words to cover up your stutter. I used to do this too, but then I eventually realised that I did not sound great changing words because I did not say exactly what I meant. So now I rather try to accept and face the stutter.

May I ask you also whether the stutter caused a problem for you to be recruted in the supermarket? I mean, since you have problems saying certain figures.

Hi Kayleigh, and welcome.

I’ll use different words that I know I can say without stuttering or i use “I can’t remember what I was going to say” which is always a good one! Or I wont contribute much to the conversation and just listen.

I also use substitute words that I know I can say without any problem, and I'll also "lead" into words I know I'll find difficult. If there's a word I know I'll have trouble with, I'll lead into that word by first saying "sorta" or "y'know" or something like that. Basically something short that other people often use so it won't seem weird.
