My actual speaking voice, when not in the midst of a massive stuttering incident, is perfectly normal, and as easy to understand as the next person's. trouble is, while stuttering, I have had many people simply misunderstand me. Just today I went to pick up a bag of safety salt, that someone asked if I'd mind grabbing since I was going out. In the process of inquiring as to where in the store I could find such an item, my request was somehow translated to, "safety rugs" lol. Needless to say, the poor guy in hardware had not a clue what I was asking for. he had never heard to safely rugs before. This kind of thing happens quite commonly with me. People look at me in puzzlement, repeating what they think I said, and unsure what that means. I don't intend to stop talking to people. I like to communicate in spoken words as much as everyone else, within reason. I am simply wondering if anyone here has had that same problem once and was able to improve on it. Anyone have any tips for me on how to be more clearly understood? I know I will likely always stutter, unless a miracle somehow happens. I guess i just want, in those moments of bad stuttering episodes, to be able to "stutter clearly" lol. :D

That happens to me all the time. I mean that. I have the kind of stuttering where no matter what is said, when it's stuttered the other person will not understand it. They will often say "what", or do what I hate the most of all: nod their frickin head as though they know what I'm talking about, when they don't.

Or their say "uh-huh-", or "yeah" when in fact they have no clue what was just said because it was stuttered so badly.

If people would kindly say "I'm sorry..I didn't understand you", or "would you like to write it" instead of acting like they understand us when they don't, I'd be happier.

But, the kind of stuttering I would be able to tolerate is stuttering somewhat, but still being able to get what I want to say out.

I have the same problem, people often don't understand what I am trying to say.

Can you guess in general when you stuttered too much to be understood?

What I do in such a circumstance is write down the word on a piece of paper. You can also ask the person where he/shee understood you, if this is not too difficult to say.
