Hey all,
sorry for my poor english!!!!!
Im a stutter and stuttering since, well i long as i can remeber........but stuttering never came in my way as a obstackle(hurdle) so far, i just finished my MBA and searching for a job(which i will get soon with a reference):o
but recently i have developed Tinnitus(ringing in the ear) as well, i feel very unlucky to have that by an ear infection(hopefully it will go away), its pretty rare and i suppose most of u would'n have even heard about it.....but that is a very annoying disorder which can effect sufferers sleep and sometimes his personal life as well....
it may sound weired but i wanna know what would u people rather have, STUTTERING or TINNITUS ?????
my choice will be stuttering.....

Didn't see this thread until now.
I would rather stutter. At least that only happens when you open your mouth...tinnitus happens 24/7, 365....and can be pretty loud.
I'm sure people commit suicide over stuttering, but there is a great number of people who do because of tinnitus.
I have slight tinnitus in my left ear (listening to music too loud with headphones as a kid) and it is a bit annoying, but I'd personally much rather lose my stutter than my tinnitus.
Having said that, my tinnitus is minor and I can imagine that people with severe tinnitus would be driven out of their minds by the constant ringing sound and as Emily says it'd be 24/7 365 days a year.
Am I the only one who's never heard of Tinnitus?

I never knew what it was until I took Audiology classes.
It is basically a ringing or roaring sound in the ears. No one is really sure what causes it, it happens to me sometimes..just a high pitched beeeeeeeeeeeep that lasts a few minutes. But for some people (especially those who have heard an explosion or gun shot of something) it can last days, weeks, or years and be extremely loud. Some seek treatment, others kill themselves. :(

I have Tinnitus, it's actually pretty common now (over 15% of the worlds population) because of the influx of cell phones, mp3 players etc... I actually didn't even realize I had it because I live in the city and there's always sounds in the city that drowns the ringing sound out. Mine is a really faint sound, it's only really noticeable when I'm sleeping away from the city, and only when I'm sleeping in a quiet room or else the fan blowing in the other room or an electronic on would drown the sound out. Sometimes maybe 2-3 times a day It'll get much worst like emily said, a high pitched BEEP for i'd say 5-10 seconds that starts loud but gets quieter as time moves on.
I wouldn't be worried about the Tinnitus at all unless it's severe, but if it was, you'd know it. It's rather harmless and most people (like me) live their lives without even knowing they have it

I would rather stutter probably at this point, b/c I have Tinnitus. People who do not have tinnitus do not know how unnerving and uncomfortable it can really be, so they do not have a perspective to draw a conclusion from.
I have had a fairly loud ringing in both my ears for about 5 years now, and it's gotten worse since then. It's come, I believe, from attending almost up to 100 rock concerts over the years, and being a musician myself - always playing and listening to my music at top volume. It was something that wasn't an issue for me back then.. I thought louder is better!! Well I still do believe that :D but now I am also far more concerned with my hearing and always wear earplugs now when I attend a concert or play my guitar or bass.
It's gotten to the point where it's definitely noticable. I usually have a fan on in my room when I sleep, and it's louder than the fan. That tells me it's pretty bad.

My answer is: it depends on the severity of stuttering / tinnitus.

So that's what that ringing is ...
Seriously though, is tinnitus the same as the really faint ringing/roaring sound you hear when trying to fall asleep or sitting at the john? If so, I never knew it was an issue lol.

Yes, there are different severeities of tinnitus. Most people just get that faint ringing every once in awhile like you're talking about. But some people have what Jamus has....very loud ringing/roaring which keeps them up at night.
Jamus, I am sorry :( Do you wear musician's earplugs?

I do wear musician's earplugs yes. Specifically designed to keep the higher frequencies audible while wearing them. Good for when I play. But sometimes those are not enough b/c they allow too much in, so I always keep another pair on me that block out a higher amount of decibels. I'm very strict on myself now. I have to be :o
Zachary, there are several stage of Tinnitus, but some people have a natural slight ringing in their hearing, even if they have not been exposed to loud sounds in their lives. But the most common cause of the ringing is being exposed to loud sounds for an exended period of time, or on numerous occasions over time.
Also - the excessive buildup of wax in your ears can lead to ringing as well. Using one of those home kits that remove wax can help with that.
My advice for anyone who has even the slightest ringing - don't take your hearing for granted! Be protective of it in the future!

I really should and will start taking your advice Jamus. I have blasting earphones in my ears 24/7, my ipod is usually full volume :( . Not to mention the death metal concerts I go to :( .

Apple earbuds are the worst. I'm almost 100% sure it was my ipod that gave me tinnitus. Do yourself a favour and invest in a nice $100 set of sennheiser over-the-top headphones--not only is it better sound quality but your ears will thank you in 20 years. I use to listen to everything full blast and after I was diagnosed with having Tinnitus I've taken steps (like having a 40% max iphone volume) to make sure the severity doesn't increase.

I looked back in my notes from my Audiology class from last semester:
Tinnitus- perception of sound in the head or ears in the absense of an external acoustic source (ringing in the ears)
- about 50 million Americans have this
- about 12 million seek help
- don't know exact site of lesion, may be in cochlear nucleus
So wow...50 mil Americans...that's a lot! And that's just America!!

I don't have tinnitus, not that I'm aware of.
I do, however, get a terrible ringing in my ears during sleep paralysis.

Everyone does, but most people dont or dont know they get sleep paralysis. Some people say that ringing in your head means you were about to "astral project" haha.

It's not always wax build up. I went to the doctors recently and I had no wax build up at all, yet have slight tinnitus in my left ear. According to wikipedia there are plenty of potential causes:
