A stammer is a mind set... that is why there is no cure, its not an illness or a virus. Its something in the mind. Recently i got a letter from my uncle who also has a stammer. It was a sorry letter about when i was young, he was impatient and told me shut up. He said that he thought that past experiences may have caused the stammer.

If this was the case then surely a phychiatrist would be the answer to this, you could properly explore uncomfortable experiences and scan memories. If someone could correct your thinking to not be nervous, to not be worried about think, then surely your speech would greatly improve.

Does anone agree with this, i find that that i regret stuff and feel negative in a few situations. Maybe if i could overcome this, my speech would improve as well.

Does anyone have any experiences with psychiatrists, are they any help

He said that he thought that past experiences may have caused the stammer.I don't think it may have caused or increased your stutter 100% but it may have played a big role nonetheless. If your uncle is also a stutterer, then why was he telling you to shut up about your stutter?

If this was the case then surely a phychiatrist would be the answer to this, you could properly explore uncomfortable experiences and scan memories. If someone could correct your thinking to not be nervous, to not be worried about think, then surely your speech would greatly improve.

I went to therapy in the public schooling sysem but they didn't help too much with my stuttering. The private ones I went to didn't help at all either and they cost an arm and a leg. I only went to them a couple times and when I was little. From what I heard....these days professionals cost around $60 an hour. Don't know if it's true, but it can't be too far off and most, if not all, insurance companies probably do not cover it.

Many of us do not stutter when we speak to ourselves alone in a room or to a pet. So your question is something to think about. I met this one ex-stutterer who cured his stuttering by treating it as a self-esteem issue. Look up Jeffrey Gurian.

Question to you all: Do you stutter more with certain people? Why do you think it's like that?

I saw 2 therapists in the past for personal issues but it wasn't working. I slowly gained confidence as I grew older but still my stuttering the same - even worse. And I stutter severely with my closest friends and relatives, who I don't get nervous in front of at all. So why do I speak with absolute fluency by myself? I have no idea. I'd like to learn more about this connection.
