I was just thinkin how useful computers are for people who stutter.Saying anything we want with no fears of blocking, not having to tell anybody of our dreaded problem(which is avoidance, but once in a while us stutterers need an escape).Me being 40 yrs old,I wouldve never new as a kid,Id be able to communicate on a computer someday,we never had these then.

i agree. as much as i think the world is becoming TOOOO dependent and obsessed with computers--- I can't begin to imagine how much easy they have made my life, as a stutterer.

PCs and the Internet are a double edge sword for stutterers. Good and bad. Encourage online social activities but inhibit real life scenarios. Use it wisely my friend.

I am way too dependent on email and forums. I should call people more often instead of emailing them, and I should talk to people in person instead of on forums....
Sometimes I hate the internet.

Sometimes I feel like I can only really express myself, my ideas, my humor through instant with my friends. I can imagine being a person who stuttered sucked so much more before computers.

Yeah, computers have been a godsend for me since my career involves being sat in front of one throughout the working day. I simply wouldn't have achieved anywhere near my current pay bracket otherwise, if I had to compete with fluently speaking folk for jobs which required good oral communication skills.
But computers do have one big negative - lack of practice speaking. It's all too easy to take the easy way and send an email instead of talking to the other person face to face.

Count me in this group as well. At the same time do feel that I relied on this more other stuff.

I don't know where I would be without my computer to talk to people, but I also don't know where I would be without my cell phone, because when it comes to talking to people, I text more than anything. It really helps me to have the ability to speak to people right away without stuttering or blocking and i think that is a big benefit for me.
My best friend/brother Nathan is a stutterer, but when it comes to talking to each other, we don't text, instant message, or anything of that nature, because we feel if we talk to each other in real life or on the phone, we know it is a safe place to be able to stutter with no judgement at all, and sometimes we'll have contests with our speech just to play around. it's really encouraging to be able to do that with someone because in a way it seems like it can help your stutter.

Your very fortunate to have a good sibling to talk and relate to. I have a brother who stutters too, it is really nice to always have someone to be able to talk to without any pressure.
