Hey I live in Canada and I was just wondering how easy it is to get Xanax or Valium perscribed for you. Those are some pretty serious meds I bet and was wondering how your doctor can just let you take them.

How did you get a hold of them? I need them to reduce my anxiety!

I am also in Canada and is wondering the same thing. I went to my family doctor last week asking about possible medications to take for my stuttering and she referred me to a mental health hospital. I am supposed to make an appointment with them this week and hopefully will get to see a psychatrist within a month or two. I hope they'll be able to prescribe some Xanax for me but I'm not giving it too much hope.

yonex- have you tried any other strategies to decrease your anxiety level?

I'm not sure how eager doctors would be to perscribe such strong pills right off the bat. I'm also not sure how healthy that is for anyone...

I would try some other techniques first....if you truely want to lose your anxiety.

Agreed, nothings worse then being dependent on those kind of pills.

I've been in therapy off an on for over a decade mate....only helped temporarly. And no I think I've exhausted all methods of speech therapy.

How long can I suffer for?

P.S. I'm glad smoking a J helps you lose anxiety, because for me it just increases it. Drinking lowers it for me!

Like breathing, meditation, talking yourself through things, etc.

You're right, it doesn't work for everyone, but it's worth trying for a reasonable amount of time before getting hooked on a pill. Any reasonably intelligent doctor will tell you the same.

But ya emily dont you take Xanax?

No. I am not a fan of being on pills.

Meditation and calming techniques like that dont work for everyone for stuttering, but I cant see why they wouldnt work for everyone for anxiety and tenseness.

I've tried so called "calming techniques" with no significant improvment of anxiety.

Yonex and inter82

Taking pills is a good idea and effective..but you should strictly follow the dosage and methods mentioned by your doctor.

Calming techniques, meditation, yoga or any such methods will only help in cases where you have mild anxiety..I am pretty sure from my web research that no stutterer have found these methods to be effective..But learning these will be useful to reduce your general anxiety.

My regular doctor prescribed me xanax with no prblem whatsoever..To see a psychiatrist in my place I should book atleast 2 months ahead.

I really think you underestimate how calming they actually can be lol. I dont know where you get this information but I have tons of websites full of information saying how extreamly effective and healthy these techniques are for your brain, body, and anxiety.

Dont get me wrong, Im not against pills. If I had some xanax right now, Id take them haha. Xanax works for me, Calming techniques work for me, I just sacrifice alittle effort and practice and prefer calming techniques for the metal and health benifits.

The argument against meditation and things like that is time. Most people don't have time to devote to things like that, even if they might work. It's easier to pop some pills. It works and if i had the money for Xanax and other stuff I would be on them.

Some would call me a pill , but don't say that to my face. ;)

Yeah meditation is usually thought of as someone sitting down indian style for a while oblivous to the outside world. All I chair and a minute of time. Not even, you can do breathing techniques/ clearing your mind/ being aware of automatic negative thoughts while driving, or even talking to someone.

You're right, I guess it doesn't matter where. I suppose I'm just too impatient. That is probably why I stutter so bad, I don't want to slow down and say what I want to say. I want to say what I want to say fast. We stutterers can't work like that, I guess.

Yeah I know what you mean. I find my self impatient, want to force out words and get out what I want to say fast without trying to be fully aware of tensness and worry. Its so ingrained in us, it takes to much work lol.

All I have is my wit and the ability to form a sentence, so that's what I work best with. :o I've had to learn to defend myself verbally because I can't really kick anyone's ass. In fact I used to get my ass kicked by girls hehe.

I see a Psychiatrist once every 6 months. I get a 90 day supply of generic Xanax XR(Alprazolom ER) for $9. My scripts have 1 refill on it. I have great medical insurance so it certainly helps. 99% of doctors or psychiatrists know nothing about stuttering. So it helps if you go in with research papers regarding different meds. Once they see some research papers/articles, they will give you what you want. Good luck.

You know...I think in general weed chills me out, anzxiety and stutter-wise, UNLESS i start to stutter, then it feels worse... im not sure if it really IS worse, or things just feel more "intense".

i just wish TN was a state that it was prescribed legally bc i know i could convince a doctor for an Rx.

I did agree to the fact that calming techniques are useful and yes there are plenty of websites confirming that.that But here we are particularly speaking about stuttering and the anxiety caused by stuttering.I have never heard from a stutterer that calming techniques helped him to speak better.

Suppose you have a job interview. You can use the calming techniques days before the interview where you will free stressed out thinking of the situation.
But on the day of the job interview no matter what calming techniques you use you will not be able to speak fluently because of the sheer amount of anxiety. Also you can not devote time to deliberately practice the calming techniques as you will have keep revising in mind all the things that you need to do like giving firm hand shake, smiling occasionally, maintaining good body language and lots of such things. If you take xanax you will definitely improve your fluency.

This is my personal experience. Finally, with calming techniques alone if you are able to perform well in such high stress situations then obviuosly you dont need pills. But the probability for this to happen is very very less.
chris If you succeed in doing this let us know ...so that way you will be a source of inspiration for other forum members.

Yeah, there is nothing like smoking some nice skunk or BC bud. My wife and I enjoy a good joint on occasion and then we'll watch a funny ass movie and laugh our guts out. Makes you feel good all over. In fact, just saw Harold and Kumar Escape last week and I had abdominal pains from laughing so hard. Whenever i do smoke, i don't feel much like getting out and talking with people though. Just wanna chill. Laughter is one of the best medicines.

i totally agree...my stuttering causes me physical pain at times. Chest pains/inflammation, muscle aches, jaw aches, etc... it is so nice to have my whole body relaxed and just wanna chill! too bad i dont know anyone else that feels the same way in Nashville! lol.
