Hi everyone-
My name is Taylor and this is my first time here. Just a little background, I have been stuttering since I was 11, which most people think is late for a girl to start stuttering, lucky me I guess. I am currently a graduate student in speech-language pathology. I still stutter and right now, it's really impacting things. I have this one teacher who is in charge of my medical placement over the summer and she wants to put me in a nursing home so I don't have to talk as much. That's BULL SHIT!!! I think I should get the same opportunity as everyone else in my class. I have received therapy through high school and stopped until this past summer. I went to a great therapist in Illinois, and that's helped a great deal. I just hope I can eventually speak like I used to.

Well, my most recent therapy over the summer consisted of really getting to the core of my stuttering and how it makes me feel. Once I got to that we worked on not letting stuttering bother you. The theory I guess is that the more you stutter and are not bothered by it, the quicker your stutter will decrease. Also, by adding stretch stutteres into your speech is helpful. That is where if you feel that you are going to stutter on a certain sound like /f/, hold that sound for a little longer and then move on. That has really helped.

Hi Taylor! Do you think having a speech-disorder helps you in certain ways in your field of study? Maybe your teacher was trying to make it easier for you but then you'll be missing out on a challenge. It's great you're not daunted by your stuttering.

Stretching out a stutter? Hmm... interesting. I think I'll try that. Does it reduce stuttering in the longrun?
