Hi all,
I noticed that when I read books or talk to myself out loud, I don't stutter but if I do the same thing in public I have some mild blocks and this blocks happens in phases. Some months I can achieve 80~90% fluency and in the bad months it drops to 50~60%, I noticed this pattern for some time now and it seems to have no relation with external factors.
I went to some speech therapists but they seem to be puzzled, because I rarely block in front of them and I pass all the tests that they make me.
I suffer from mild blocks that is for sure, but why it happens in phases, this is what bothers me. ?:X
This forum is actually my first real contact with other stutters, what I would like to know, is this normal in people that stutter/block?

I often read out loud to myself and although I find my stuttering is much improved while doing this I still block a fair bit.
My stutter doesn't really come in phases like your appears to either. It pretty much stays at a constant level but it will be worse if I'm speaking to someone I don't know very well or with someone I'm not comfortable with.

Aah one of the annoying stuttering mysteries that points out how diverse stuttering really is and how each of our stories are so unique

I 2nd that. I have problems with words that begin with the letter "H", and when I used to work at retail, our neighbor store was at the hamilton mall, so I would always ask people if they wanted me to call them...but I had so much problems with H words in public that I would just call it "the mall in mays landing" every night I get to my car, I would say tons of H words to myself flawlessly! Pretty frustrating stuff man.

My stuttering is really weird. I absolutely do not stutter when reading aloud to myself. Even in high school, I could read an entire paragraph out loud in front of the class and not stutter one bit. But, when asked to read one sentence aloud, I had trouble! I can still remember the panic that struck me, when the teacher would start with one person, and each person had to read the next sentence. I can remember just freaking out trying to count the people ahead of me to see which sentence I had to read. Kind of makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

"Fun" Memories! I did the same thing.
This is probably already been researched, but it would be nice to see which areas of the brain are activated when we are in situations where we don't stutter and when we stutter. I think this is one the purposes of pagoclone.
Why the hell is so difficult to cure stuttering. Billions of people suffer or suffered from it, probably since the caveman, yet is one of those things has no known cure.
Maybe its Nature way of saying, we should evolve into another form of communication like telepathy hehehe

The problem is pinpointing a cause and this may not be consistent between stutterers either. We also stutter very differently probably to each other and it could be aggrevated under different circumstances. Some times it has appeared during speech development and other times in adulthood. We have so many different stories. Also I do not think cure is a common thread of research and development (except from drug companies trying to make a buck).

Yeah, I see your point. I hope pagoclone at least helps some of us without the adverse secondary effects of the other meds.

I've been able to get to the point where I can read out loud almost perfectly fluent in front of a speech therapist. Surprising, considering that I used to consider traditional speech therapy a joke.

Great I hope you reach a point of being able to take it outside the clinic successfully

I think you and I have exactly the same stuttering problem and I dont think this type of stuttering is common as I rarly hear or read about stutterers being fluent in reading but stutter when there in public. I stutter more severe when there are "external factors" like loud music , television when my atmosphere is tense or when there are lots of things going on around me like conversation or somethings that when I stutter. I can easily coversate with a person next to me when its quite or something I know its weird. I too got a speech therapist from my highschool because it was one of the few ways you could get this device called the fluency master paid for my the school. She told me that I may not qualify because I would probably do too good on the test. But she still offered me the tests to see if I can get it, but I insisted on not taking any exams as I knew I would not qualify. I stoped seeing her because I knew that her simple speech therapy techniques would not work very well for the level of fluency i had. I gave up on the device specifcally the fluencey master which I deperately tried to obtain, I gave because I knew those things were not a cure Im currently awaiting for the drug pagacone so it can fix my social life and have that unprecendented happines that I never had since I was a kid:o
Anyways to answere your questions I do not stutter when I read it the only time when I say fraises that start with words "did and do" and some other words actually many other word but the dame Fu**ing word "did and do" I HATE em because its such a coversation starter

Let us know if pagoclone works for you. Unfortunately I can not try it yet.
