I have a friend who can sings beautifully during chuch sessions or whatever singing sessions.

But when not singing, he stutters when he speaks.

It's weird. Why?

Perhaps that's his true calling in life? If he has an amazing singing voice, then perhaps he should pursue that as a career?

I don't stutter when I sing also :)

This is not uncommon.
I had a great singing voice when I was younger, if fact I was a pro musician for a long time.
Something about the rhythm I suppose...
One has to breathe differently to sing, too.
Thank God stuttering leaves us with SOMEthing we can do well :)

In all of my research, I've found that most stutterers do not do so when singing. The mechanics of singing are different than normal speaking...I think the rhythmic nature of singing accounts for this...just as when I was in therapy as a child, speaking to a metronome completely eliminated the stutter...but, of course, that method was not practical, as one cannot speak to a metronome in every-day situations. :)

No problem! A metronome is a triangular contraption that contains sort of an upside down armature that tick-tocks back and forth at a frequency you set. It is used for timing when practicing music...like piano lessons.

Here is a link to one: http://lointains.si.bleus.free.fr/images/metronome.gif

I don't know how widely used it is today in stuttering therapy...but I do know it had little or no effect on me except during the session while speaking by the rhythm.
