View Full Version : How old were you when you began stuttering?

I ask this question because from what I have read stuttering usually begins before the age of 6. I only started "blocking" when I was roughly 9 years old, but a speech therapist diagnosed me as a clutterer before I started severely stuttering because I spoke at such a rapid speed from a young age that no-one could understand me.
It it abnormal to only start blocking at age 9?

I began to stutter somewhere between the age of 8-9 without warning or obvious cause over night one day. 8 years or so with no stutter or obvious speech issue then suddenly BANG

I can relate, except I started even later. I think it was between 12 and 13. I've been fluent for 2/3 of my life thus far. And knowing how it felt like to be fluent back then hurts more than anyone insulting my speech.

I have ALWAYS stuttered, ever since i began to talk. I also had a lisp and some other random speech issues, but they all went away by the age of 5..shame the stutter didnt.

yeah i pretty much had mine since i was able to talk. i cant really remember any specific incidents but i do remember whenever i were to say something around my dad he would always say SPIT IT OUT! i didnt know wat was going on cuz i was so young. lol then my parents slowly realized i had a problem and tried to get me help. uhh didnt work apparently..
I was 5, in kindergarten. Had been talking well before 2,and even reading well by age 3. From what I have read and heard, it is unusual to have had fluent speech first, for a couple of years, and then start stuttering, which has persisted into adulthood. I am ok with it at this point, after many years of not being ok with it.

Around 9 in forth grade. Everyone initially thought I was imitating one of my stuttering classmates but except this time it wouldn't go away and just kept getting worse and worse every year as I became more aware of my surroundings i.e educational success and girls.

From the time I started speaking I think. I'm not quite sure cuz I don't remember the first time I started, its just always been a part of me.

It seems most stutterers start really young. But I didn't notice any signs of stuttering until I was about 14/15 which is quite strange. Now I'm 20 years old and I'm not really sure how my stutter has progressed. Some days I believe its gotten worse over the years, then other days I believe I've gotten better. There really is no logic behind it all.

I've been stuttering for as long as I can remember, early elementary school days. I am 22 now and I am determined it WON'T defeat me.

However, a number of years ago, about 5 to 6 years ago it came back. and i've been stuttering since. i am 19 right now, turning 20 on the 18th this month! woo!

Strangely enough, I didn't stutter till around age 14-15. I have no idea what brought it on.

It started when I was about five or six.
I remember other children asking: "Why do you talk like that". But I had no idea what they were taking about lol. It wasn't untill a few years later that I noticed my stutter. Everyone thaught it would just go away, but it didn't....It just got worse....*Sigh*
