I've noticed that if I haven't worked out for a while and then I suddenly lift weights one day, my speech gets noticably worse for several days afterward. It feels sort of like my nervous system is a little more "jumpy."

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

i work out regularly and feel a lot better after working out, im usually less stressed. maybe you should workout more often so your body gets used to it.

i can relate. After a hectic workout your body produces more dopamine to give more energy (it expects it will need more energy for your next workout) which can increase your stuttering. My answer: work out every day first thing in the morning. This uses up a lot of your dopamine whilst lifting so you will have considerably lower dopamine levels for the rest of the day. Less stuttering and a ripped body:)

Dredrick, lifting weights entails tightening the throat and closing the lyrnx to retain air, and this is very similar to what happens when some people have a block. Maybe the weight-lifting making your body activate your valsalva manoever too soon?

Just my two-pence.

I lift weights quite a lot but I haven't noticed it having any effect on my stuttering.

That's interesting. I find that after working out my heart rate seems to stay elevated for a while after (maybe an hour or two). This tends to raise anxiety level and increase stuttering for me. So I avoid working out before work.

It'd be the opposite for me. After I have a good workout session or anything that really makes me focus and apply myself, in the after glow of it I talk fluency like a heavyweight champion in a post-match interview outside the ring. It's the adrenaline.

When i lift weights or exercise in general, it gets me pumped and confident. Probably less aware of my stutter when im in this mode.

Its because when your body is tired you stutter more like when you dont get enough sleep ,same thing

Its the opposite for me also. The feeling you get after a good weight lifting workout is an awesome feeling and that confidence calms me down in social situations i seem to stutter less.

Knock on wood, hope i didnt just jinx my self.

I worked out for about 5 year straight and never really noticed a difference.
Although I did have some blocks at the gym from time to time.
Im not sure if it was related to my stuttering or not.

I have worked out for many years and I noticed that right after my workout I am relaxed like most people, but that coupled with my fatigue (from working out) makes me stutter more.

I get a similar feeling when I am lacking sleep or if i'm tired from a long day - and exercise does tire you out. So being tired is no good for me.
