View Full Version : Any stuttering girls?

Ok seriously, I have never met a girl who stutters... I wish I knew one lol Cause sometimes I feel like I'm the only girl who stutters. I'm aware that there are, but so few.
So, who are you? :P lets talk about this from a girls prospective... What are some things/issues that may effect a girl more so than a guy, if any... whatever it may be, I wanna know!
Guys are welcome to post as well if need be :) :P

Hello, I am a stuttering girl! I picked up the habit from my stuttering brother. LOL I have a mild-moderate stutter, so I can hide it for a while. But boy, if i get upset or anxious at my man the blocks and stammers come full force! LOL

I stutter! :D (and am a girl) haha :p
There are surprisingly quite a few females on this forum, considering like only 20% of stutterers are female and 80% male
i don't think that there are really any stuttering issues that affect girls more than guys though.. Although i do tend to notice my stutter more when i have my periods, and it seems to sometimes decrease slightly when i'm ovulating.. but that could be more due to a fluctuation in moods ;)

Hey, nice thread! :) I am a member of a local support group and out of about 8 members I am one of two women who attend (who stutter, there are other women but they are the GA's and stuff).
I've heard stuttering affects men to women 4:1 or something like that. My family is very weird. My mom, sister, and I stutter....none of the men do. Not even my mom's sons....very odd!!! :)

It is good to see so many girls on this forum..... I've personally on met 2 other females who stutter and that was when I was at The Hollins Institute in Virgina speech therapy a few years back....

I've never ever thought about my periods affecting my fluency lol!! now that i think about it I don't know what connection there could possibly be between the 2. Maybe while you're having your period you're feeling a bit more emotional?
Ive found that my stutter is extremely situational. Like with one person i can be 99% fluent and then when i talk to another i would stutter more...Its quite frustrating because I've no idea why this happens lol. I have mainly repetitions of syllables, not separate sounds or very rarely at least.

Hello! I also have not met many other female stutters. I know they have studied testosterone levels of stutters....
I never noticed my period affecting my speech either...maybe I will start paying attention! :)

stutteringgirl, that would be very insightful to have a gma who stutters and has lived with it for a long time. My great uncle stutters...but he also lives on the other side of the country, so I've never met him.

My ideal life companion would be a woman who stutters. I think having that in common with the woman I love would be a pretty great connection!

@TK421 .. u r right .. ideal companion can be a woman who stutters .. She will understand where I stand ... and tht will sooth both me and her instead of nervous ..
But if someone can find a girl who don't stutter and they understand each other then they too can be companion .. we should not let only stuttering to decide our future .. tht's a very small criteria to find a ideal companion

Who would order at the drive-thru though? Believe it or not, this is actually a serious consideration of mine :p Not that it would matter I guess, if we truly loved eachother then so be it. I'm pretty decent in the kitchen anyway :D

Hey ... if I am not wrong then I don't think stuttering can be inherited ... Its more like a habit ...
Isn't it?
Stuttering is an inheritable trait. My mom stutters and so does my great uncle. There is a difference between developmental stuttering and chronic stuttering.
Developmental is usually when a child has a hard time speaking before the age of 7.
Chronic is when the person never outgrows the stuttering and they continue to stutter as adults.
A lot of the people on the forum are chronic stutters including myself.
There is a chance you could pass it on to your children just like my mom passed it on to me.

My first game system was a Nintendo 64, when I was around 6 or 7, and I loved Mario and Yoshi. Especially "Yoshi's Island." :D I got it from Kohl's, though, and was surprised and happy that they had actually made a video game characters' t-shirt for girls finally!

I believe the male:female stuttering ratio is somewhere around 5:1 at adulthood.
I've only met one girl who stuttered. She has a moderate-heavy stutter and it gets even worse when she gets excited. The thing about it - she's always excited. My friend didn't want me to talk to her because I've been known to ruin relationships. After talking to her for a few weeks, she's a lot better off with controlling her stutter.
I feel so accomplished.

There is a page 'Women Who Stutter: Our Stories' which you might like to look at. Incidentally, about four times more men than women stammer.

female!!!! nice to to know other women do....... i tend to rapidly babble stuff that builds up and ends up all wrong or go quiet to avoid the embarrassment and fidget which really gets me nowhere. Doing accents tend to work well for me. I don't really know why. Breathing is something i'm trying to learn how to do. Silly really as its the first thing you do.

Female here!!! *waves* nice to know i'm not the only one. I basically avoiding speaking totally or fidget which gets me nowhere or babble on really quickly and end up not getting my point across. It gets exhausting. Anything to avoid getting the mind block and stuttering. I basically don't know how to breathe properly when im asked a question or have to do something. It's habitual. It's really hard because i'm contantly getting asked if i'm alright or why i look p***** off when i'm not. Then i fear that people will think i am being rude when it's quite the opposite. I care what they are thinking. It's so frustrating. I was thinking of trying the mcguire programme. I'm absolutely fine sometimes too. Especially when doing accents. Which i have come to be rather god at now. Thank god i have a sense of humour. anyway i'm going to stop babbling now.

Another stuttering girl here :) I've also never met another person who stuttered until I sought out speech therapy in college. But then again I was fairly covert so its entirely possible that I've crossed paths with other stutterers who thought the same thing. but you wouldnt believe how relieved I was when I first met another PWS...it was almost like we shared the same life story haha.
The program I'm in now also has a very disproportionate number of girls, much greater than 4:1 in my estimate. Maybe girls are more likely to hide it? Not that it bothers me that girls are outnumbered, but it would be nice to have more female friends who know exactly what you're talking about when you've have a "bad" day and can lend their perspective/input.

Hi folks, I'm with a video production company out of Atlanta and we're doing a documentary on women (ages 18-30ish) who stutter. There ARE social issues women experience that men do not, and women often don't meet or see other women who stutter, making them feel a little more isolated.
With that being said, we're looking for women in North America (US and Canada) with a moderate to severe stutter, fit inside our age demographic (ages 18-29 and English speaking), and are available to speak by phone for an interview and of course later be available for an on-camera interview. The women featured in the documentary will be PAID for their participation!
Our production company is Radiant3 Productions, visit us online at www.radiant3.com. To contact me to interview for the documentary, please email me at casting@radiant3.com. Thanks!
