i dont understand how i can sing and read perfectly. im sure everyone is like this except for the reading part for some people. but with me i am totally fluent when reading even when i come across words that i know i would not be able to say without the word in front of me. is this because im able to see the word and makes it easier for me to sound it out? and the singing part is so weird! is it because singing makes u speak in a constant flowing tone approaching each word with ease? i would consider myself as a mild stutterer so maybe this isnt the same with severe stutterers.

Dear WhiteLatinoBoy, Stutterers stutter when it matters, when they are communicating and when they are presenting self. Your car may have a flat tire and you are amazed that it is flat only on bottom side where it needs to support the weight of the car. If you are courageous enough to use singing for communication, singing instead of talking to people, soon you will learn to stutter on singing also and just as sever, because stuttering and singing together is just even more weird.
The path to fluent speech is by accepting that you stutter because of internal inhibitions. You must respect your blocks and do not fight with them so hard. You must help your listener to get your message, with you practicing responsible communication. You must transcend your selfishness and focus on being a good communicator for the sake of your listener. You must ask your listener to help you in your communication by paying attention to what you want to say.

I also am fluent when I read and sing. And I am a moderate stutterer. I have always been able to sing fluently. As for the reading I started becoming fluent a few years ago. My speech therapist began reading with me at the same time and after a few months I gradually became fluent reading alone. Now I am 90-95 % fluent reading.

I also speak very fluent when reading. I guess visually being able to see the words aids the speaking mechanisms in physically producing the words.

I've heard we don't stutter when we sing because we have constant breath support and our words are tied together instead of chopped apart. I stutter really badly when I read....really sucks for Bible study type environments.

We stammer when we sing because singing uses a different part of the brain than normal speech. Some people stammer when they read, others don't. Again, it's probably something to do with differences in the neuroloigaical pathways in our brains. Any kind of rhythmical speech, such as syllabical speech, can usually help us re-establish greater fluency, at least for a while.

Yeah, I also don't stutter when reading, singing or thinking out loud. Sometimes its frustrating knowing that I'm perfectly fluent when I'm alone but in social situations I stutter a bit if I don't use speech techniques to control it.

Yeah I read good with family and close friends but when I go to Youth Group I'm afraid me being nervous will somehow spoil the fluency. But I think its just an excuse :)
