Wondering if anyone has used Symbyax......to aid in stuttering???? Just before I went on Pagaclone, I was on it for only about a month, and man did it improve my speech. It is a mild anti-depressant combined with a bi-polar medication.

The first week I felt little difference.....then, the second week was amazing! I can only discribe it like this..... I felt like all the "obticles" in my brain which causes me to stop/start/stutter on words etc.....vanished, and I had a "free flow" of words coming out. I still stuttered.....but a HUGE improvement. Nothing like any other drug I've tried...and man I have tried quite a few!!!!!

Just wondering.......

I have never heard of it. Is it a drug that you can pick up from the high street or is it something that you would need to go and see a doctor for and get a perscription?

This is VERY interesting... I googled it and it says its a combination of olanzapine and fluoxetine hydrochloride, so basically Zyprexa with something else. And as expected, one of the side effects in increased appetite (not good!).

Just out of curiosity... you mentioned before you've taken xanax, was the improvement with this drug similar or better than when you used to take Xanax?

Thanks a lot

why did you stop?

I had to stop to "clean" my system for a month BEFORE I could be admitted to the Pagaclone study......it was a very hard decision because of the great fluency I was getting

Yes this is true..... the mix of olanz and fluox. Yes a side effect is the increased appetite...but I tell ya the amount of fluency gain was quite impressive.

No comparison with Xanax! Fluency on Symbyax was like nothing I have EVER seen.

The drug is a VERY strong drug...its basically a combo of Zyprexa and Prozac.

I've not tried this drug, however I did the who zypreza thing and yes my blocks went and I was 80% more fluent, but I was knackered all of the time, tired, drowsy, no energy, put on weight and felt lousy.

I stopped after 7 months, I liked the increased fluency, but the side effects were too much. I piled on 20ls in weight, however from all accounts I was lucky, I have heard of some people (on higher doses) putting on 100lbs, others getting diabetes as it messes up your blood/sugar/lipids levels etc.

It does not work in the same was as pagoclone does and pagoclone (so far) does not have major side effects.

Its clearly a brain issue, imbalance of dopamine in the striatum that throws out the timing, linked with habitual conditioning and its a self fullfilling thing, we fear stuttering, anxiety increases, we stutter more..

As for this drug, its FDA aproved for bi-polar and not stuttering and unless you REALLY need it, I'd stay away from it as the side effects could be fatal (there are forums out there for people who have taken zyprexa and Eli Lilly are being sued for billions as we speak).

Lets hope th trials go well and the drug companies dont fleese us when it comes out.

I never stated that Symbyax was used specifically stuttering. No drug is that is FDA approved...... however you are correct about it having some pretty strong side-effects..... although I don't know if "DEATH" is considered a side effect. Very strong words for someone who never has even used the medication..... IMO.

Looks like this thing isn't available where I live... I'll ask my doctor though.

Btw Jfan, how much did it cost you? Because I know zyprexa is quite expensive and besides I've heard reports that it hasn't helped everyone, I mean, not 100% of people experience more fluency when taking zyprexa. And putting on weight sucks. But anyway, worth a try if I can find it here that is and it doesnt cost a fortune ;)

JFan - I am aware that this drug is not FDA approved for stuttering - no drug is FDA aproved for stuttering as of yet..we are all aware of this fact.

If you take a look at some of the people that have been adversly affected by these strong antipsycotics you will be quite shocked....people have gained 100+ lbs in weight, become diabetic and some have died.

Take a look at the class action suit against Lilly for Zyprexa, note that they also make Sybyax...which is basically Zyprexa + Prozac.

I know from taking zyprexa how it made ME feel...tired, lousy and heavier in just a few short months, so IMHO I do know how it affected me.

The brain is a complex beast and we should not be messing with it, I know that we are all pi$$ed off avout our speech problems, but taking strong antipsycotics without knowing the side effects is dangerous.....if we are well informed and you weight up the pros vs cons....go ahead.

Just my 2 cents

Well said. It's a tough call.... yes it put about 10 lbs on me fairly quickly, and my Doctor did advise me that we had to watch for Type 2 Diabetes with Olanzapine.... but man did that level of fluency and confidence fell awesome. I have heard so many people say they would "do anything" to reduce their stuttering etc.....well maybe a few extra pounds (not 50!) and having to "watch" ones blood work is not "that bad" of a burden for more free flowing speech..... Hopefully this is a mute point and Pagaclone is the real deal! :D

I know that is was covered under my Insurance soooo... not "that much", if I remember $20 or so per prescrip....

Also..... I'm not "pushing" people on this or ANY drug.... it is just a finding I had, that seemed to help ME.

Hey JFan, you seem to have a good knowledge for stuttering meds. In terms of fluency, how does a dopamine antagonist (olanzapine) compare to a antidepressant + tranquilizer combo (clonazepam + celexa)?

I am far far from a Doctor....so I can't answer this with any sort of confidence..only from what I have experienced. All I can tell ya is I've tried the Symbyax (olanzapine/prozac) and the Celexa and Xanax mix, and personally found a huge improvement while on the Symbyax, instead of the Celexa/Xanax mix, and was that was VERY diffucult to come off of for me. But again I really can't comment on the specifics of drugs....:D

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to keep on my anti-depressant / anti-anxiety mix for now ( 1mg Clonazepam , 10mg Prozac) untill I no longer am satisfied with its effects. When this happens I am going to switch over to Geodon or Abilify, my psych says they are new dopamine agonists that have less side effects and are safer than risperidial / olanzapine.
