Hi everyone,

My name is Bart. I am 21 years old and I live in upstate NY. I have been stuttering for about 5-6 years. I started stuttering when I was in the first grade, but it was for a very short period of time. Then I was completely fluent up until the 8th grade. I'm not sure why or how, but that's when I started stuttering again.

Throughout this time I have been through numerous therapies, and therapists. I finally came to the conclusion that most of the information that's available comes from people who never stuttered a day in their lives, and who are frankly clueless as to how to help someone who does.

I think that places like this forum are really a stutterers best shot at getting some useful information. I look forward to hearing from you guys and gals.

The best advice I can give is to conquer your emotions as it relates to your stuttering. Obviously, the physiological part of stuttering is important (techniques, knowing how to breathe, etc). Personally, conquering my own stuttering "demons" has been the best therapy for me, even better than the techniques. Less stress and embarrassment, less stuttering. :D

Good to have ya!

The best type of speech therapy I've ever had is group therapy with an SLP there. For everyone it can be a little different.
