i have a ton of trouble saying my name on the phone when asked for it. ive decided that if speech therapy doesnt help, im legally changing it. ive talked to everyone but my husband about it. i dont know how he would feel about it. i wouldnt expect him to call me by the new name. but he's able to make phone calls, so he doesnt understand how big of a problem this is. i cant even call the call appt center to make an appt at the navy clinic! the last time i tried, i told the lady that i had a stuttering problem and to just bear with me. after 2 minutes of silence (i was trying really hard to get my name out) i told her that i couldnt say my name. she said 'well, i cant schedule an appt for you if i dont know who you are!'. i cursed at her, hung up and cried for a little while from frustration. kids may be mean, but adults can be much worse. THEY KNOW BETTER!!

Are you sure that is the best course of action? Your name is your identity. Talk to your SLP about this too.

I can't say I know exactly how you feel because i've never been it that bad of a situtation but I don't think it's necessary to change your name. Can't you schedule appointments in person?

i once read that all stutterers have problems saying their names,
and when a stutter changes his name after a brief period of time he starts having same problems proununcing it

i will admit i have thought about it many times especially when i was younger... be it that i like my name, i dont wanna "give in" to the stutter, or i'm just to lazy... i desided against it lol

SLP stands for Speech-Language Pathologist.
I personally think it would be a stupid decision. You will be able to say your new name fluently for awhile, but will go right back to stuttering on it once you're used to saying it again.

I gotta agree: Changing your name will only help for a little while.
Do what I do: Spell it to the person. When I'm setting something up over the phone when they ask me my name I respond with "It's spelled ...." and that well get the job done.

for most stutterers our name is our most feared word.
i know guy from the mcguire course he couldn't say B's his name was Bill he changed his name to Dean guess what word he can't say now? yep Dean.
changing might help for a little bit but in the end it's not a real solution.

The human beings destiny is to be free of oppression from human beings. Nature can oppress us as much as it wants and we will fight back, but no human being must be oppressed by human beings or by self.
The word "Negro" used to be a respectable name for race from Africa but later we decided it is more respectable to used "colored." Later "colored" became taboo and the term "black" was acceptable. Now some people think "black" is a derogatory term and we must use the term "African American" Perhaps later "African American" will develop complex also.
It is not the name, It is our oppressive nature that must be kicked in the butt. The solution is that we must accept as a religion that the "The human beings destiny is to be free of oppression from human beings"

I've considered changing my name years ago but it won't cure your stuttering. I've struggled before with my name too maybe when calling just say " yes hi my full name is ....." I find when just saying your name first it causes my throat muscles to tighten up. Also just relax it helps take deep breathes before speaking on the phone. Remember also your parents gave you your name it's a part of you don't change your name.

I have the same problem but I really don't think that changing your name will help you in the long run. What I do is, I say "My name is Ophie" instead of "My name is Sophie" and that usually does the trick. Maybe you can find a way to trick your stuttering, too.

I changed my name after I came of age to a name I could say. This was in 1958. I went through my childhood eating chocolate ice cream because if was impossible to say vanilla.
