Hi, im sam. Im from the Philippines, and I'm 23 years old and im a nurse working at a most prestigious hospital in my city.
My earliest recall of when my stutter began was when i was still about 5 years old. I remember it was on my birthday that some of the guests found it amusing that i constantly repeat syllables and that i often had to stomp my foot just to complete a word.
Though sometime when i was in grade school i can recall that i didn't have my stutter anymore, somehow ,i just lost it i guess. I was able to speak freely and i was even active in church readings wherein i would go on stage and read the gospel of the day. It was nice, i was able to do much of what I wanted to do. I maximized it and stuttering never came into my mind.
When i approached highschool, there it came again. I noticed gradual blocks whenever i spoke in front. It grew worse over the years. It interfered with much of my school work, reports, plays and discussions and even simple oral recitations. But it didn't stop me, even with the ridicule i get often, and i went on to struggle even through my college years.
Now I am a nurse, luckily i didn't stutter much when i went for interview and luckily got a job in a hospital. Communication is a very essential part of my job, especially when it comes to relaying to doctors and receiving their calls. It often gets me into a complete mess when i begin to stutter while talking to them. My stutter now is the type in which i have a complete block before I am able to begin a sentence. They tend to misunderstand my moment of "silence", they think I don't know anything just because it took me a while to answer. They think I'm dumb, incompetent and say that i should be here. Nevertheless, I do my job well and my patients can attest to that. Its just when i am asked to speak in pressured situations where my stutter really attacks most too.
I try a lot of remedies, I've read a lot of theories and herbal treatments. Luckily one of them led me to this site. Thank you. I hope many of us can get through this and achieve fluency especially when we need it the most. Count me in on this, we can do this.
Thanks for having me here.
