hi guys, first post.

basically, it took me a while to get my first job cos i was so nervous about the whole thing. i was 17 when i first got a job and it ended up being in a call center. and i think you guys can understand that was pretty horrible with having a stutter, there were some people who were really bad and one person shouting at me saying i was stupid because i had a stutter etc. and since then ive worked the same kinda work, and in this job environment its hard to go for something i dont have experience in

so i guess my question is, is anyone else here ever worked in a call center or a similar job where you have to talk to people all day and its not exactly ideal?

I wouldn't even dream of going for a job like that, the stress of talking on the phone to total strangers would drive me to the brink, but good on you for trying it. I wouldn't let anyone call me stupid for having a stammer; I'd rather tell them to stick their job where the sun don't shine and have peace in my life, even with no money... you're young, so don't be afraid to try other lines of work - it's highly unlikely that you'd stay in the call-centre business for life anyway. Did you have experience of call-centre work before you started at 17? No, you never, so there is always something else out there for you, experience or not.

I worked for both Goodyear and Firestone in their retail stores answering the phone, greeting customers and selling tires. I worked in 4 different stores, I was always the top tire salesman where ever I went, even breaking records sometimes by double.

If they give you some leeway on how to do your job as long as you get results its usually a help. For instance Goodyear had a canned way they wanted everyone to answer the phone, but the manager let me answer anyway I was comfortable with.(i once overheard him tell someone I could sell ice to an eskimo) So he let me do what ever I wanted in terms of addressing the customer.

I had to answer the phone 30 40 times a day and wait on a lot of customers.
I was once diagnosed as a moderately severe stutterer. But it seems i did a little better cause the customer was walking into my territory where I had some control over the situation.

So i cant see why you couldnt do the job you describe.
