I just want to know what other stutterers are like socially. I'm the only one in my school who stutters, so I don't know how other stutteres act.
I run track, play piano, and I have a good amount of friends. most of them are girls because for a stuttering guy girls are more accepting. I have been flickering in and out of attempting to be part of my sports team, but I tend to freeze up socially in large groups of people.
How bout everyone else?

I'm pretty social. I like meeting new people and making new friends. I'm very open on telling new people about me stuttering and trying to educate them. I have a mix of male and female friends who are very accepting of my stutter.

I've always had lots of good friends and I avoid the occasional head.
Interesting about the girl friends, I've always had a lot of good friends who are girls. Ive never figured out why and I never considered the stuttering aspect. I don't try and chat up every female which I think helps. Maybe that is related to my stutter. I don't know, interesting. Anyone else here have more than average number of "just friends" of the opposite ?
Cheers,
Paul

You are lucky. For me it's much harder to fit in in just about any situation because my stuttering is much more severe. If you want to find more, visit my blog.

Well girls thought it was cute from the time I was 5 and some still do. So I guess my looks help with the cuteness factor. But I just freeze up when I'm in big groups of guys and girls because my stuttering gets worse.

I have many 'friends' who like me, but no close friends in college. I think part of it was both my stutter and being stuck on upper campus rather than a freshman dorm, Idk. I do believe my stutter hinders me - in fact I'm certain it hinders me. People like me, part of that reason is because they feel bad for me, but nonetheless I can be friendly...Sometimes I feel like that disabled kid in elementary school who everyone just acts nice to.

No group, really. I only have a handful of friends, and I have a hard enough time speaking to them as it is. I'm not really social so I don't know how/don't have the opportunity to make more friends (even looking past the whole stuttering part).

that's exactly how I feel. there are the kids who have overeccentuated greetings, but can't actually talk to you. I hate not knowing how people actially see it.

I as well have had "unusual" success socially with women. probably in the 70% girls 30% guys range. I am a good looking guy judging by the women I've dated. This definitely didn't hurt my chances. Honestly, if that wasn't the case I doubt I would have had as much success so looks def make a difference.
I also agree with the person who said women are generally more accepting than guys. Since day one I've thought that. If I was standing next to a female and a male I had to pick one to have a friendly conversation with, 100% of the time I would pick the female.
Lucky me I guess.
