I work at a job..it's an office typing- I am
a data entry clerk...and of course I do that
stutter heavily thing...

I'm working hard -- but I question
being placed behind a cubicle....

I have worked there for 6 years and not
gotten any advancemnt...

I wonder if the supervisor has me
behind the cubicle, to make customers
not see me so they will not be prone
to talk to me cause of the speech thing...

I don't like the fact they have to isolate
me behind a cubile because of my stutter...

All the rest of the employees in the office are
sitting at desks like me, but their cubicles
are formed in a way that they can see others
walk through the door, and help them...

My cubicle has like an L shape facing the
door in the back corner, so customers or salesmen don't see me or know I'm here...and it indeed makes me feel isolated...

I'm not allowed to talk alot, and I want
advancement.. but I think it has to do with
the stutter thing....

My question is: Is my supervisor descriminating
me by placing me in an isolated cubicle in that back corner?? As a way to hide my stutter....

I also heard that stutterers are bad for a
businesses image....I'm not sure if that is true....

If it is, how did I even get this job....I'm not
saying I'm ungratefull, I just think if the supervisor
has to hide the stutter behind a cubicle- it means
I might make business look bad with the stutter...

If I do start to stutter, I get told to "zip it"

I'm not sure if that is discrimination or what...

And I do want advancement in this job, but the stutter might be preventing me--

For them to hide the fact I stutter which is something I cannot help, and to not advance me so I can
be challenged...I'm not sure if they are doing it for the benefit of the company, or if they are
discriminating....

Whatever it is, to me... IT"S VERY UNFAIR...

Also this was perhaps the only job I was able to land with the help of my parents and one of my
mother's friends....

Many of the jobs before I went on interviews for::
(dish washer-- bag boy at P&C) I could have
gotten trained for, and I'm a fast learner...

I stuttered somewhat during the interviews,
and of course I don't get called back!!!

They are jobs where on the job training is available--
so that means I am able to do the job without prior experience....but yeat I never get called back after
a job interview-- I have no doubt it was the stutter-- I am a very hard worker- but cannot get a positive
interview......

The office job as mentioned above--- I did
not get an interview for..my parents were
friends with a friend of the employer.....

Had I gone on an interview myself alone- no doubt
I would have not gotten the job....

So now that I have the job, I have to be
in semi-isolation because of the stutter...

I figure since they hired me, they do not
want me to stutter in front of vendors and
customers, or they will have to let me go....

And they probably realize since nobody will no likely
hire me if I applied for another job because of my stutter, they don't want to have to fire me because of my stutter...so they keep me behind a cubicle
to have no interaction so I will not be fired....

Is that discrimintation, or being unfair??

Should I bring a copy of The America With Disabilites
Act to every job interview so I do not get discriminated against??

I know it's long and somewhat boring, but any
opinions would be great....

Firstly ask for a better cubicle. Say you have been working there for 6 years and say you don't like being isolated

Next do they actually tell you to be quiet when you stutter? If so resign and go to an employment tribunial saying that they drove you out of your job.

How many others have been promoted above you within these 6 years. Is your work always a good standard and do you always meet deadlines?

If you are working hard for 6 years and some smuck gets promoted after 6 months in the company then you might have a case.

I'm only allowed to talk a little bit- and I mean
a LITTLE bit... so I really don't have chance to stutter--because the talking I DO do is very short
yes or no answers, or if I need to go to the
men's room, I don't have to ask to save on the stuttering...

If I talk alot to someone which I'm not allowed,
I get told to zip it, because If if my stuttering
is heard they get in trouble for talking to me...

In other words the more I stutter, the less I'm
allowed to talk.....

One other salesmen is a slight stutterer, but
is an expert salesmen-- talks constantly all day
selling, phone with vendors, salesmen...since
he only stutters kinda, he basically is a superb
salesmen who sorta stutteres...

As for the 6 years and I have not gotten promoted....

I got this job the exact month and day and year

Feb 8, 1999....

So from Feb 8th 1999 to the present without
any sort of promotin.. how many years is that???

Based on what you have wrote, you have a case to file a discrimination suit against the company and if other people in the company have been promoted you might have a case for unfair labor practive

i myself have a cubicle job since august of last year.
My cube is an isolated corner of the building along with the other Sales Support Administrative but that's only because is the only spot where they can fit. But i take my time to interact with the Sales reps and Sales Operation managers

if you get told to zip do you take the iniative to keep talking? Also have you been assertive in what you do such as going beyond the call of duty, finding faster ways to get projects done, etc.

I'm trying to be mean or anything but it sounds like you need to voice yourself more at your work

I don't understand this no talking thing, it sounds more like school than a workplace. In my limited experience of working this was never an issue. If we were working we could talk as well. Ofcourse i was a computer technician, not a data entry clerk. But still, being told to effectively shut up is just not on.

Also if you want the big $$$ try to attribute this discrimination to your stammer getting worse.

Does feel like school at times...everyone at work is allowed to talk, except for me...

The point is I'm afraid to speak up in fear
I will not get the promotion I deserve...

dude, you have a job...period. i'm your age and i have nothing. what type of job do you want to get promoted to?

i have a good education but anything in the field i'm qualified for has some speaking and some interaction so they expect you to have communication skills. what do you do?? do you tell them you stutter and get eliminated from consideration?? do you keep it a secret and then stutter in the interview and get eliminated anyway?? a promotion for you would most likely mean speaking; why would you want that. i understand not wanting to be in the same job forever, but, as stutterers, we don't have many options. i'd be happy for a "stay in the corner and come out when the work is done" kind of job as long as i'm getting enough money to live off of.

like you, i'm currently working on some job that my mom will help me get. i'll see how it goes. i probably couldn't get one on my own if my life depended on it.

Hello All,

I retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. At the time of my retirement I was night shift supervisor. I was in charge of all the flight control and heavy maintenance on C-130 aircraft at my base. I had to do a lot of talking to my supervisors, peers, and troops.

After I retired I worked for 2 years as an aircraft mechanic for US Customs. I recall stuttering and blocking during the interview, I was hired.

I then became a cop, I was the top student in my academy class, all of my training seemed easy to me. I was placed on patrol in a very rough area of town, my evaluations were all excellent. I've made numerous felony arrests, I went on an average of 90 calls per month, I responded to numerous calls as a back-up unit. I was a very busy cop. As a cop you can wait for things to happen or you can be proactive, I was proactive.

I was then told to take a demotion or face termination based "SOLEY" on my speech impedement. I took the demotion and I'm currently in the process of fighting my demotion. During hi-stress times I did not stutter (No time to think about speech) I was able to give clear commands when I drew my weapon on a suspect. I called paramedics for people and so forth.

The sad thing about the whole situation, I'm not the first cop who stuttered. We have 2 Sgts. who stutter, one is a detective and the other is the SWAT Sgt. and they have been allowed to advance and succeed, one Sgt. may make Lt. There is a bunch of cops nationwide who stutter. From what other cops have told me, I did my job well. Most cops are brutally honest, if you are screwing up they will tell you, our lives depend on each person doing their job and doing it well.

Fighting the good fight,
