Hi everybody!

I've recently been thinking about muscle relaxers and how they may be able to help stuttering. It makes sense right? I mean since your speech muscles get tight and tense when you stutter, muscle relaxers are to help your muscles relax and loosen them up. But I don't know if they can actually do that for speech muscles. And how they would work for long term use plus side effects. What do you guys think? Has anyone tried them before for speech, did you see any improvement? Has anybody seen any research about this? Thanks so much!

I have a little experience with muscle relexants - not all entirely legal.

One of the symptoms of stuttering is a tightening of the jaw muscles, so what you say makes some sense on the surface. I've had back problems, and muscle relaxing drugs helped a little with the pain. The problem is that stuttering isn't caused by muscles tightening - stuttering causes the muscles to tighten. Do you see the difference? If you didn't speak alll day, your jaw muscles would never be tight.

When you take a muscle relaxer, once it gets in bloodstream, it's working all the time until the effect wears off. So unlike back pain, you'd be getting the effects of the drug when you don't need it - when you're not talking. Muscle relaxers also tend to make you goofy. :D That's why people favor them for "entertainment purposes." Your stuttering might actually lessen, but more because you were high than from the muscle-relaxing effects.

I expect that someone somewhere has tried this as therapy, but I also expect that I'm right about the results. I'm not a pharmacist, but I do have considerable experience with both stuttering and drugs.

There are medications that are said to improve fluency, but I think its cause they have some effect on dopemine. So I would search and find out what those drugs are, instead of just trying muscle relaxers.
