What are your reactions when people say
"slow down", "relax", "take your time", "breathe",
"take a breath", "spit it out"???
I get this said by alot of the coworkers at my
job, and I try to ignore it, but deep down
it makes me feel like "it's not that simple",
and it actually makes me feel degraded...
You would think that advice would help any
stutterer, but since it obviusly doesn't because
talking for stutterers is just not that simple,
someone saying that to you makes you feel like dirt..
One can breathe, and slow down as much as they want, but they still may stutter alot!!
I want to strangle people when they finish my sentences. I just ignore them and keep talking.

I thought people are trying to help a stutterer
when they finish their sentences..
I know if I was stuttering bad, and
the words were on the tip of my tounge,
I know I would want someone to help me
out!! For a stutterer, one needs all the
assistance they can get!!

I don't mind it when people do this to me, i usually get stuck on the last word and them filling in is helpful.
As for "take a breath" etc, i just want to hit them.
What if you were talking smooth and somewhat slow to speak clearly so they don't have to guess what you are saying and they finish your sentence with something completely irrelevent.

what i hate is how people trivialize the issue by thinking "its not that big a deal" or that we shouldn't "think about it". the non stutterer will never understand. we just have to put up with the idiotic and insensitive remarks and continue to persevere.

I wrote about this just recently. It's a topic that has touched a sore spot in me, as well. While I think that most people are just trying to be helpful (let's face it...many have little exposure to stutterers)...I do think there is an element out there who truly believe we are making ourselves stutter and if we just take their little ingenious tidbit of help...CURED!
I even once had a 4th grade teacher make such degrading comments to me in front of an entire class of children. Not surprisingly, that's almost the only thing I remember about that teacher or about the 4th grade.
Nowadays, when someone does that, I'll immediately respond with, "Thanks, but that doesn't help."...if I'm feeling particularly short on patience, I'll say, "Don't do that. Okay?" If they are not socially retarded...they will get it right away.

Yes, you've hit on one of my pet peeves. I sometimes get, "Oh, well, we all stutter sometimes. I stutter, you stutter...all God's chillen stutter! It's just the way everyone talks!"
I want to say, "Right. Just like how all of us sometimes can't walk and have to be in a wheelchair. It's just how everyone walks, right?"
Of course, not. While everyone does fumble over words now and again...and may even have an authentic stuttering episode in a very stressful situation...this is NOT the phenomenon known as Persistent Developmental Stuttering.

Being a High School Senior, I've experienced speech therapy since I was too young to remember, my current speech therapist constantly tells me it's the key to fluency in my situation, is simply "slowing-down." I'm a very fast talker whenever I'm talking about something I'm interested or passionate about and it's difficult for me to "slow-down." When I do "slow-down" it's varied results, sometimes I feel like its helping and sometimes it feels dramatically worse... However in the situations that I’m talking about something that I’m very passionate about and intrigued I’m actually the most fluent whenever I’m speaking fast, it’s much worse going slower, however when it’s a normal situation it’s the other way around.

annoying as hell when someone says it, but its only people who have no clue what they're talking about that seem to say it, so its best let it be.
