Hello All,

I started taking propranolol on 7 Dec 05, my doctor prescribed 20mgs three times a day for migraines. I noticed a marked improvement in my speech. On 27 Dec 05 my doctor raised the mg amount to 120mgs to take once a day. I was also prescribed Buspar, I have noticed my anxiety getting less and less. This enables me to speak without the fear of stuttering. I still block but not as often as I used too. When I do block, I'm able to come out of it much easier with a lot less effort.

I use to be terrified of the phone, now I'm always on it. The anxiety I felt in the past is getting less and less. I have not experienced any negative side effects.

Great post man, glad to see you are having success.

I'm booked for an appointment on Tuesday with a doctor. Going to try to get him to prescribe me propanolol and buspar.

Propanolol is a high blood pressure medicine.
Buspar is used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (an anxiety disorder).

Makes perfect sense.

EDIT: The way my post was presented sounds like I am being sarcastic. I am not being sarcastic.

No offense taken,

Well, it's been 20 days since taking Propranolol and 5 days on Buspar. The results are amazing, On most occasions I'm fluent where in the past I would usually block. I'm still dealing with feared words and sounds.

When I block I'm able to use the techniques I've learned in my countless sessions of speech therapy, I'm able to get through the block with a clear mind, not stuck in the moment of the block.

These meds are a GODsend, people take meds for all kinds of ailments, why should stuttering be any different? Now they are finding out it may be caused by a chemical imbalance in our brains.

During the past, I would have times of relative fluency for approximately 10 days then I would fall right back into my old blocking patterns. So far it's been 20 days, it's amazing.

Perad,

I don't have high blood pressure, I do have migraines and was prescribed propranolol for migraines. My doctor mentioned propranolol has been shown to reduce stuttering and blocking.

Also I have never been diagnosed with OCD, I believe anxiety in stutterers, is caused by stuttering and blocking. Research has shown Buspar significantly reduces anxiety. With this reduction it tends to make speech easier (In my case).

I have not experienced any negative side effects, My doctor wants me to come back on 27 Jan 06 for a check up to check my blood (To see how my liver is doing) and to see if I need the dosage adjusted.

I know several people who overcame stuttering who said they spoke with 90-100% fluency alone. They said to not care what people think and put yourself in speaking situations.

I believe stuttering is an anxiety disorder that effects communication. There is something we do wrong with the muscles in our throats, mouths, and chest.
