Hello. I'm new here. I'm from China and currently living in Canada. I stutter in Chinese occasionally when I was young partially because I, like many kids, thought it would be fun to imitate people who stutter. I never had problem speaking English until I moved to Canada.
I'm a mild stutterer but lately it's gotten worse and had affected my social life (especially when I have a phone conversation). I'd like your opinion if my problem is mainly psychological. I have mental blocks speaking certain words with similar patterns, such as words starting with "re", i.e. remember, relationship, result, etc. and now slowly I have trouble speaking other words such as university, international, and etc. Other words are OK, but whenever I feel like i'm about to say one of these words, I get nervous and started having trouble saying them. Should I consult a therapist or is there something on the market that can help me?

Dont waste your time and money on therapy,,it doesnt work for 95% of us and makes things worse for a lot of us.

I would try some medications, you can search on this list for what others are using xanax and others.

In the next couple years Pagaclone will be available.

I think with everyone who stutters the problem is psychological to a degree. You could try relaxation techniques or over the counter drugs like oatstraw but it may not be of any help. Trying speech therapy would be a decent idea but it isn't something that works well for everyone. Sorry I can't be of more help and welcome to the forum.

Even stutterers get this wrong. Stutterers have psychological problems due to the stuttering, its not the other way around. Stutterers lack confidence cause they stutter, they dont stutter cause they lack confidence.

I agree, but that's not the whole story. The psychological problems contribute to stress, which then aggravates the stutter. And the more you stutter, the more psychological problems you may have. So it's a vicious circle. So if you also work on your psychological problems, you will alleviate or even break the vicious circle.

I'm not saying that stuttering should primarily be treated psychologically. In my view it's fundamentally a vocal fold problem which can be alleviated by vocal fold therapy. But supplemental aids such as stress management, and psychological aids such as assertiveness training and visualisation can, in addition, also be very helpful. All the above certainly helped me.

no, you don't stutter when you sing, and you dont stutter when you talk in a chorus too.

I don't stutter when I sing, talk in chorus, small talk, talk to my mirror, or in French (I don't have anyone to speak French with). I stutter horribly when I'm introducing myself, saying anything about myself that I don't have an excuse not to know, and in Spanish when conversing with people who don't know English/when I'm not allowed to switch to English.

Hello! Your stress/psychology is probably making your speech more strained, but it is not the cause. our stuttering is not because we are psychologically imbalanced. We may stutter more because we have learned fear and stress, but it is not the root cause. --If you want to see a therapist about the stress of stuttering, that could help your state of mind, but will not eliminate the stuttering.--And I disagree with speech therapy being no help...it depends on the Ideology of the speech therapist you see. If he/she is talking about being cured, or cant understand why you cant take clinical success out into the "real" world, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!--Look for a therapist who wants to manage stuttering and not cure it. So many of us have had terrible therapy experiences, but good ones are possible. Good luck.
