My questions are:
What cause us to stutter ? Is that because of our vocal chords or is it somehow related to our brains ?
It'd be best if you support your answers with scientific researches!

My reason for asking these questions is that I want to cure stuttering in my future career. But I don't know what exactly causes us to stutter so that I'm not sure about what major to take in college! Well, I'm only 15, about to turn 16. Some of you might find this funny but I mean what I say. I'm gonna cure stuttering because I don't want people to be stuttering like me-us.
The answers of these question might help me set my goal and find my path towards curing stuttering.
Thanks all!

I could care less why I stutter, I have absolutly no interest in why I stutter,,it matters not an iota. You are young, dont waste your time and brain power with something that matters not one bit.

by the way they are pretty sure they know there is somthing organic with dopemine levels. Matters nothing to me.

What causes stuttering? That is the million dollar question. There are many theories. Some theories are backed by some research, but there is no consensus on the cause as well as the treatment of stuttering, these remain hotly debated but interesting issues. These days, the main research focus is on the brain.

If you want to become involved in research for a cause and a cure, you should consider studying in the area of speech and language pathology. Many people who stutter become speech and language pathologists, and some have become quite famous in the field. It seems that choosing this as a career is very beneficial for the speech of a stutterer. You will learn so much about stuttering and how to manage it.

AT THE SAME TIME YOU SHOULD TRY TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND, and be VERY critical and don't accept all the information on stuttering taught at college at face value, because as far as stuttering is concerned, the knowledge base is in some ways not standing on firm ground, and in other ways could be out of date.

To give an example: Charles van Riper's text book 'The nature of stuttering' was very influential, but did not even mention Dr Hans Selye, the father of stress research whose work has become the foundation of our knowledge of stress (which plays such an important role in stuttering). Probably as a result, many speech pathologists / therapists have an insufficient understanding of stress and how it impacts on people who stutter.

In the meantime and while you wait to enter college I would suggest that you learn as much as possible about stuttering, whether in books or on good websites - try to become your own 'speech therapist'. Also study your own stuttering to see if the theory you are reading about conforms to your own experience of stuttering. Good luck, and I hope this helps.

@howee: it's good for you that you don't care, but other people care! There are so many people in this forum crying and whining about it: why they stutter and that's not fair and so on....! I understand the feelings, you might understand it too! It affects your life in someways. I don't want to see people going through that. I don't want any stuttering forum exist. It's not only for my sake, but also for others.

@Nemo: thank you! That really helped. The only field that involved in brain that i can think of is neurology, now that you mentioned speech and pathology. I have more options to choose, but, which of those two has better chance of curing stuttering ? I don't my studying for over 10 years, even 15 years to be neurologist, as long as I have my goal to achieve!

Well, you still have time to consider this before you start your studies. Maybe you should consult a real expert to get an answer. It will also depend on what YOU think is a fruitful area of research. (IMHO so much research seems to be barking up the wrong tree.) Personally I suspect that the vocal cord muscles are the bandits that cause stuttering - if I could have my life over I would maybe study in this direction, maybe first do a basic degree course in speech and language pathology, then do postgraduate research on the vocal cord muscles of people who stutter. I would also combine that with a study of stress and tension, which probably falls under neurology.

When we find the cause we'll find a cure.

I personally think it's genetics.

There is certainly a time when the RIGHT man comes around... (it is proven by the human history many times)
So, I wish you luck! Do what you gotta do.

I personally think that brain is the main cause of stuttering. According to my observation, there are lots or almost all of cases involved stress, fear(which is basically thought to be the cause). If the vocal chord has something to do with it, then there will be 2 more ideas about it. Those are: the vocal chord is the cause itself or both the brain and vocal chord.

@Bill: that's why I'm asking this. This will help me see what's most likely the cause of stuttering and I'll go for that direction.
@emily: if it's genetics then what cause us to stutter ? our Genes? DNA?
@Wind: hey, i might be THAT man!
I see that there's not a lot of research about this, so to ask you to provide proof for your answers must be a difficult task. I would like change my question into: "What do you THINK that cause us to stutter?"
Because you know your case the best, so you must have some kinds of ideas about this. Everything will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks to All!
